"The US remains a key strategic political and trade partner for South Africa. With the exception of PEPFAR Aid, which constitutes 17% of South Africa’s HIVAids programme, there is no other funding that is received by South Africa from the United States."
@kinjeketile you will love this.
That 17% from PEPFAR is almost half a billion dollars! See: "In 2024, South Africa benefited from $453 million in direct funding, with roughly $439 million allocated for 2025"
That means that the Republic of South Africa spends about $2.6 billion on its HIV/AIDS interventions and of that, domestically foots $2.2 billion! That's the whole budget for many East African countries!
In short, Ramaphosa seems to tell Trump that he can take his few dollars and shove them up your MAGA whatever.
South Africa is not Egypt, Israel, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi or any other hellhole where withholding aid from the US is akin to a death sentence.
That's how you respond when you're a founder member of BRICS and can still field a nuclear capable force (and have a navy with real submarines) if you really wanted to.
A look at South Africa's land ownership patterns in numbers:
The 1913 Natives Land Act restricted Black South Africans (then 67% of the population) to 7% of the land. This was later increased to 13% through the 1936 Native Trust and Land Act.
Ssegirinya was a rare breed of politician. He used wit, humor and charm to send perfectly strong political messages. He was unrelentingly joyful - even in his dying days. He was a true community leader and champion who relied on local solutions to local problems
What we are demanding of them is something they are not only incapable of providing, they are incapable of managing or even ideating. They lead by crisis rather than visions and oh boy, the NRA/M/O manufactures those crises each day.
I managed to grab some shots at the #MasazaCup2024 before security threatened to take my camera away for not having accreditation. Hopefully next time we’ll be credited and get you better footage. For now, enjoy this montage!
Emmwanyi Terimba Initiative was started in 2016, as a means of addressing the poverty we witnessed during the Ettoffaali Drive (2013 - 2016). UCDA joined us and provided 10 million seedlings and extension services which led to improved crop quality and quantity.
Selling our coffee without value addition results in lower earnings. However, even wealthier Brazil and Vietnam, which grow more coffe, also sell “kase” because the large European and American markets consume freshly ground coffee at the end consumer outlet.
UCDA should be funded further and retained to: advise on good farming practices; improve quality of the crop on the farm and after harvest; raise the quantities produced; popularize the drinking of coffee; and explore possible bi-products from the coffee bean.
Government attempts to control the coffee industry have raised concern: the Coffee Bill 2020 which had punitive clauses like imprisonment of a farmer who abandons his/her farm; entering into an agreement with Enrica Penneti giving her a monopoly over the coffee chain; and now the UCDA (Amendment) Bill which aims at scrapping an agency superintending an activity upon which millions of Ugandans depend for their livelihoods.
These maneuvers point to unclear motives, more so when the stakeholders’s views are not respected. CPM

THREAD:
The response to a march on parliament, surely, cannot be violent breakup, detentions, arrests and intimidation. It is, counter-productive, unhelpful and dangerous both in the short and long run....
Please don't be the one to sell people fear. If you're afraid of being on the streets, stay home and amplify the message if you support the cause.
But don't try to water down or discredit what others are doing in the clamour for a better Uganda.
As for regime apologists...gasiya
We can no longer stand by and watch leaders who openly endorse corruption.
Watch our future robbed by people who won’t even live long enough to feel the effects of their wrongdoings.
This is a call for each one of us to make a stand and #StopCorruption#March2Parliament
