Every time you fly over the Pacific, you're crossing 3 miles of black water that no human has ever seen the bottom of. Something has been living down there for 66 million years. And last week, something massive showed up on sonar. ๐ฆ
Are stablecoins insured?
Mostly no, and the exceptions are narrower than people assume. Here is the straight version.
Government deposit insurance does not cover stablecoins. Federal deposit insurance in the United States covers bank deposits. It does not extend to digital assets, including stablecoins, and it does not matter whether you bought them through a bank.
Reserve rules are not insurance. Under the GENIUS Act and MiCA, stablecoin issuers must hold and disclose reserves backing the tokens. That reduces the chance the issuer is not holding what it claims. It does not pay you anything if the platform holding your tokens is hacked, or if redemption breaks.
The platform is usually your real exposure. Most people do not hold stablecoins directly. They hold them on an exchange or in an app. If that company fails or is compromised, the issuerโs reserves are not the thing that determines what you get back.
Private crypto insurance exists and is specific. Blockchain Deposit Insurance Corporation (BDIC) covers qualifying loss events including exchange failures, verified hacks, theft and confirmed exploits. Standard tier covers $0 to $10,000 per holder, Preferred $10,000 to $20,000. It does not cover lost keys, forgotten passwords or your own transaction mistakes.
So the honest summary: your stablecoin is probably not insured right now, the rules protecting it govern the issuer rather than you, and coverage exists but you have to arrange it.
