Dr. John Rotenberry studied the ecology/population biology of birds in arid shrublands & grasslands for 40+ years. In recent years, his research includes impacts of parasitoid flies on ecology, behaviour & the evolution of Pacific field crickets alongside partner Dr. Marlene Zuk.

Males became mute from structural changes to wing shape, which formerly created recognizable chirps when rubbed together.

However, these flatwing males may be parasite-free, but how do they find a mate without singing?

To secure the next generation of offspring, parasitic flies hacked the acoustic signalling system of crickets, zeroed in on the sound's origins, & deposited sticky larvae onto the male crickets, eventually killing them.
