Citizens of India, Beware , the presumption of Citizenship has been inverted.

For seventy-five years, the state presumed you were a citizen, and had to prove otherwise. Now the burden has been flipped onto you.

No one at the conclave named that reversal more precisely than Dr Niraja Jayal, a scholar of Indian citizenship.

The Constitution and the Citizenship Act of 1955, she reminded the room, were built on the principle of unconditional jus soli — citizenship by birth on the soil. Underlying it was something simpler still: a presumption of belonging.

"The foundational conception of universal, equal citizenship in our Constitution," Jayal said, "was underpinned by a presumption of citizenship. That presumption of universal citizenship is being replaced, as we speak, by a presumption of universal alienage."

Alienage — the presumption that a person is a foreigner until shown otherwise — was, in her account, the thread connecting a set of developments that are usually reported as separate stories.

"It is the principle underlying the NRC. It is the principle underlying the SIR. It is also the principle underlying the latest salvo against passport holders." Each arrives dressed as something routine. "One day it is an amendment to the law on citizenship. Another day it is a new method for the routine task of revising electoral rolls. Yet another day it is a throwaway comment about whether passports constitute proof of citizenship or not. But all of these are tending towards the same purpose, the same objective — the presumption of alienage."

Rajagopal here.

I received my renewed passport a few hours ago. Its renewal had been blocked after the Kolkata Police submitted an adverse report citing the deletion of my name from the voters' list under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).

I thank everyone in this group for your words of support and for your efforts to amplify the issue.

However, I must point out that, viewed against the larger backdrop, the issue has not progressed much since I discussed it publicly last week. As far as I know, neither the Central Government nor the Government of West Bengal has yet issued any clarification on whether data collected under the SIR for a specific purpose can be used for other services.

Some media outlets called me to ask whether I felt "victorious". What an insensitive question to ask! Since they did ask, I told them that I do not feel victorious. I continue to feel as despondent as I did a week ago. Unless and until there is policy clarity on this issue, it is difficult to claim any real relief.

Instead of asking me whether I feel "victorious", the media should be asking the Central Government and the Government of West Bengal why they have not clarified this important issue. That, surely, is the question that deserves public attention.

I hope every friend in this group will continue to discuss the larger issue—not my individual plight—on every available platform until such clarity emerges.

BREAKING: Justice Jeremy Johnson has ruled that the Filton 4 will be sentenced as terrorists – even though two juries refused to convict them of violence charges over their efforts to disable an Israeli factory in the UK making killer drones for use in Gaza. They were found guilty of a minor charge of criminal damage.

Judge Johnson kept the jury in the dark of his plans to sentence the four as terrorists. This is the first time in British legal history that anyone has been sentenced as a terrorist for damaging property. It's a very dark moment in an increasingly authoritarian Britain.

Thousands of legal professionals complained about Johnson's clear abuses of legal procedures to help the government's case for proscribing Palestine Action as a terrorist group.

Johnson has now proved this was always a show trial.

We found a new way to break the network into blocks and train them independently. The trick? Treating the network’s forward pass like a diffusion model denoising a signal.

This reinterpretation slashes the memory needed to train deep models. In our #ICLR2026 paper (https://t.co/PK5h0mqQSo), we matched end-to-end performance across ViTs, DiTs, and LLMs. We did this while training just one isolated block at a time.
