PETITION AGAINST THE ALLEGED POLITICIZATION OF STATE INSTITUTIONS AND THE EROSION OF DEMOCRATIC VALUES IN NIGERIA
To Whom It May Concern,
We, concerned citizens of Nigeria, wish to express our deep concern over what many perceive as the growing use of state institutions to intimidate, harass, and silence political opponents.
The recent treatment of Mallam Nasir @elrufai has raised serious questions about the state of democracy, fairness, and political tolerance in our country. Many Nigerians cannot ignore the irony that a man who was among the most vocal and influential supporters of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's presidential ambition now finds himself at the center of relentless political battles and legal troubles.
Whether one agrees with El-Rufai's politics or not, justice must never be selective. The law must never become a weapon reserved for critics, dissenters, or former allies who have fallen out of favor with those in power.
A democracy cannot survive when citizens begin to suspect that government agencies are being deployed to settle political scores. A judiciary cannot maintain public confidence if its decisions are perceived as serving political interests rather than the cause of justice.
The Nigerian people deserve institutions that are independent, fearless, and guided solely by the Constitution. They deserve courts that are respected because they are impartial, not because they are powerful. They deserve law enforcement agencies that pursue criminals with the same energy they pursue political figures.
History teaches us that governments often become most dangerous when they confuse criticism with opposition and opposition with criminality.
President Tinubu's administration should remember that power is temporary, but the precedents it sets may endure for generations. Every action that appears vindictive weakens public trust. Every perceived act of political persecution deepens division and cynicism among citizens.
We therefore call for transparency, due process, equal treatment under the law, and the protection of democratic freedoms for all Nigerians, regardless of political affiliation.
Nigeria belongs to all of us, not to any political party, government, or individual.
Justice must be blind.
The law must be impartial.
Democracy must be protected.
Signed,
Concerned Citizens of Nigeria
By this your kakawa logic, should we also draw a straight line from almajiri to fraudsters, armed robbers, kidnappers, baby factories or cultists in Southern Nigeria?
I'm always amazed at how some people can be highly educated yet profoundly ignorant on certain subjects. So permit me to offer a brief lesson to you, Mr Generalizer!
Almajirai, terrorists, and bandits are not the same thing. Conflating them only demonstrates a lack of understanding of Nigeria's security challenges!
Firstly, not every almajiri becomes a menace to society. My father was an almajiri in Hardawa, Bauchi State over 90yrs ago, where he memorized the entire Qur'an. The almajiri system of his time was very different from what we see today.
I also had a young almajiri who helped with household chores many years ago. He later moved to Kaduna, found legitimate work, and eventually became a successful businessman. Years later, he visited me, I didn't even recognize him when he bowed down to greet me till he reminded me who he was.
My point is that, almajiranci does not automatically produce criminals! Does this mean I support the current almajiri system? Certainly not. It is in desperate need of major reform. But acknowledging its flaws is different from falsely claiming that every almajiri is a terrorist or bandit in waiting.
Secondly, terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and Lakurawa are primarily driven by ideology. Their recruitment cuts across different social and economic classes. Their ranks have included university graduates, professionals, clerics, and people with no formal education. Yes, some almajirai may have been recruited, but so have many others from entirely different backgrounds.
Thirdly, banditry is a different phenomenon altogether. Most bandit groups are driven by criminal enterprise who are mostly from the fulani ethnic group, who engage in kidnapping for ransom, cattle rustling, extortion, and territorial control. Their motivations, structures, and recruitment patterns are fundamentally different from those of ideological terrorist groups. I can almost guarantee you that none of these Fulani bandits are almajiris.
Nigeria's insecurity is a complex problem with roots in poverty, weak governance, corruption, unemployment, communal conflicts, porous borders, criminal economies, and extremist ideologies. Reducing all of that to "almajiranci" is not analysis, it is oversimplification!
Before making sweeping generalization, it helps to understand the subject matter. Complex problems deserve informed discussions, not convenient stereotypes!
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk!
Gas finished last night and the kids were craving shawarma, I was too. Hubby said to go out to get it for all of us with drinks for dinner, I punched my calculator to see how much it will cost for a family of 5.
I arrived at over 35k. 12kg gas now cost 24k, we would use it 4weeks at least. I chose gas over shawarma.
That is for a family where both partners work and earn decently. We couldn't even afford a basic treat without punching the calculator. Everything extra is now considered luxury
Now imagine the life of a child whose both parents are skilless, unemployed or earns meagerly.
I know many of you will come and ask if shawarma is food, no it's not but everyone deserves a treat once in a while.
We all know what we are doing but you people should fear Allah.
‘Rabuwar mu da ita sai goben da bata da gobe.’
Hamisu Breaker (Ba Yanzu Ba)
When I first listened to this song, I tried translating it into English as a poet who writes in English. Then I realized that the translation was nothing more than a poor imitation of the original, the words came across, but the poetry was lost.
‘Kalmar so tana nufin abinda zuciya ta so
Amma a nawa bangaran rai ne da rayuwa
So ne lagwan mutane biyu inda shakuwa
Mai kama dan adam da aljan da beguwa
Domin mu gane so sai mun kara nutsuwa’
Hamisu Breaker (Kalmar So)
I’m not even sure I’ve quoted the most sophisticated line in the song, but this is Breaker’s most philosophical song about love.
Every line, every stanza, makes you pause and reflect on what love truly is.
‘Abincin idaniya, kallon ka ne
Karfin ji na kunnuwa sauraron ka ne
Natsuwa ta zuciya, samun ka ne
Garkuwan cikin jiki, kusantar ka ne’
—Shamsiyya Sadi (Gangar So)
I love this stanza because Shamsiyya captures the very channels through which love lingers in us and makes it difficult to let go of someone we truly love: the eyes, the ears, and the heart; then again, the skin, the touch, the fire.
She understands that love is not held by the heart alone, it lives in every part of us.

If you need proof of how disconnected many #Arewa politicians are from the realities of their own people, consider this:
The governor of insecurity-ravaged and poverty-stricken Kebbi State reportedly bought himself a luxury golf cart to cruise around the grounds of the Government House.
While ordinary people battle hunger, fear, unemployment and banditry, their leaders are busy acquiring toys for comfort and prestige.

I could say much more, but I honestly cannot put it better than Mallam Bello Abdullahi did in the piece below:

From Horseback to Golf Cart: How Kebbi's New Nobility Announced Its Divorce from Reality
By Bello Abdullahi
The Kebbi State Government recently bought an 6-seater luxury golf cart. In a state where children forget the taste of eggs. In a state where roads have become graveyards. In a state where the only thing moving fast is poverty.
But no. Let us not be harsh. Perhaps the cart is for emergency services? No. Perhaps it is for transporting patients? No. Perhaps it is to help the governor visit flooded villages? Don't be silly. It is for leisure. For cruising the Government House environs or even the golf course. While outside the gate, people are cruising from one hunger to another.
This is not governance. This is a sitcom.
Defenders will say: "Every government buys vehicles." True. But not every government buys a toy while their people are dying. There is a difference between a utility vehicle and a luxury cart. The difference is called shame. And shame, in Kebbi, appears to be in short supply.
Politics is not just about spending money. It is about reading the room. And the room is on fire. But the governor is too busy polishing his golf cart to notice.
Let me say it plainly: Feudal politics in Kebbi: comfort at the top, anger at the bottom. That is not a slogan. That is a coroner's report on public trust.
Even medieval kings knew when to hide their gold. When famine came, they wore rags, publicly. Why? Because they understood performative modesty. Our own elite have graduated beyond such peasant concerns. Why pretend to suffer when you can simply stop pretending to care? It is called efficiency. Modern governance.
The golf cart is not the problem. The golf cart is a symptom. The disease is a ruling class that has seceded emotionally from the republic. They no longer feel what the people feel. They no longer want to feel it.
To the hungry citizen, that luxury cart is not a vehicle. It is a slap. A middle finger on wheels. And the message is clear: We are not like you. We will never be like you. And we are tired of pretending.
Luxury at the villa. Suffering in the villages. That is the equation. And the people are solving it every day.
A government can survive incompetence. What it cannot survive is contempt. When the governed realize that their leaders no longer even pretend to understand their pain, the social contract dies. Quietly. Irreversibly.
So enjoy the golf cart, Your Excellency. Enjoy the smooth electric ride around the villa. But remember: outside those gates, the people are watching. And they have long memories.
And when the reckoning comes, as it always does, that 6-seater will not carry you far enough.
Abdullahi, a writer, under the #GaskiyaAlliance platform writes from Kaduna.
Mallam Nasir El-Rufai’s doctor was at the ICPC today to follow up on medical tests recently taken by his patient. The doctor was prevented from seeing him by operatives who insisted that the doctor must present written approval by their chairman. This is a brazen violation of an explicit court order that Mallam Nasir @elrufai must be allowed unfettered access to his medical doctors.
In addition, I, his wife, brought his dinner as usual at about 7pm today, 15 May 2026. ICPC officials also denied me access, saying that they would not accept delivery of dinner after 6:30pm. This is just as bad as denying his right to medical visitation and we will not stand for it.
@ishakaa@ShehuSani@AWTambuwal Can't imagine how am blushing seeing your rebuttal to this shameless sycophant called Shehu Sani. In Sha Allah he will never get that thing he has been waiting for.
