Campaigners from STOPSuicide UK, alongside journalists and advocates, requested a meeting with the Minister to discuss:

Safeguarding failures
Transparency concerns
Cases involving serious harm and death

Who Gets Heard — And Who Does Not
On its own website, Gingerbread confirms that it has participated in roundtable discussions with Ministers, including Baroness Sherlock, providing direct input into CMS policy discussions.

At the same time, groups such as STOPSuicides UK (STOPS), which are raising evidence of:

Suicide linked to CMS processes
Elevated mortality among paying parents
Safeguarding failures
have been repeatedly refused equivalent engagement.

This is not about whether Gingerbread should be heard. It is about why others are not.

Evidence drawn from internal Operational Leadership Team (OLT) material suggests that the CMS operated within a structured framework that included:

a target of approximately 35% of cases being managed through Collect and Pay
a focus on identifying and moving “switchers” from Direct Pay
an operational emphasis on increasing Collect and Pay usage
This raises an important question:

Was Collect and Pay being used solely based on individual case circumstances, or was there a broader operational strategy influencing its use?

That cost is not abstract. It includes:

Lost employment and tax revenue
NHS and emergency service costs
Coroner and legal processes
The long-term impact on families and society

Instead of investigating and initiating a Public Inquiry the Child Maintenance Service was given even more extreme and unconstitutional enforcement powers which allows them to collect money that is not owed and totally unevidenced.

We need a Public Inquiry into the operations of the Child Maintenance Service NOW!

Baroness Sherlock, the BBC report is only part of a much wider and deeply troubling picture surrounding the Child Maintenance Service.

https://t.co/WGtFc555HG has now highlighted DWP figures showing 9,258 deaths of CMS paying parents between 2020–2024. Using national mortality comparisons, campaigners estimate thousands of these deaths may represent excess mortality within the CMS population.

Disability News Service previously reported death rates among some CMS paying parent age groups were up to three times the national average.

These figures demand independent scrutiny — not silence.

Parents and families have raised concerns for years regarding disputed arrears, enforcement practices, mental health impacts, and lack of effective challenge before enforcement action proceeds.

The public deserves transparency and accountability.
