2) Emus

My first time seeing emus as well.

Emus are the second largest birds in the world, after ostriches.

They are flightless birds. (They don’t fly) and are native to Australia. The national bird of Australia is the emu.

They can run and swim.

Now to the interesting part😂:
We saw a male emu incubating some eggs and the tour guide told us that:
1) Female emus choose their partners. They look for a suitable male emu and mate with them. In fact, the male emus consider it a privilege to be chosen by a female emu. While the female lays the eggs (which are large, green in color), the male does the incubation.

2) The male emu doesn’t eat while incubating the eggs, it can only drink water. And a typical incubation period can take up to 50 days or more.

3) What does the female do while the male incubates her eggs? She serves as the protector, looking out for her partner and the eggs.
But you know the funny part? She is polyandrous in nature. After all that process, she can easily leave the male and look for another suitable male. Imagine, after all the male went through.😭🤣🤣

4) Male emus do not only incubate the eggs, they are also responsible for taking care of the young emus.
Male emus are excellent incubators and can help in incubating the eggs of other birds.

5) Emus are omnivores.

6) An Emu egg can weigh up to 680 grams, which is the equivalent of about 12 chicken eggs. And yes, you can eat an emu’s egg. It’s nutritious. I guess you’d just have to share one egg with others.

PS, the tour guide told us that the other male emu, Bruce, who wasn’t chosen by Ella(the adult female emu), once attacked Edwin(the chosen adult male and incubator) and destroyed one of the eggs while he was incubating. Bruce was so jealous Ella didn’t pick him. They had to build a temporary fence to ward off Bruce.😂😂
(Look at Edwin incubating the eggs in the second frame. You’ll see the chain-link fence that was constructed to keep Edwin and the eggs safe from Bruce and other predators)

I guess the right one will come his way, he should just be patient.
