Well put @MbuyiseniNdlozi. You give us hope that our country has the next generation of leaders to move it forward. However leadership needs strategic thoughts; balance between ideology and reality. All major decisions need thorough analysis before lounging into action. Thanks
Please take note of this dear South Africans…
Unless you understand what South African means to the world… why it was colonised, why it has the largest white settler community on earth, and why US top politicians said it is too important to be left to South African! Unless you get this… you will NEVER know genuine FREEDOM!
Your politics will always fall into the hands of an enemy so merciless, so dangerously inhuman, that its damage on our social fabric will take centuries to recover & heal!
This is all they have been looking for! An internationally discredited South Africa is a weak & docile nation. No socio-economic challenge you can ever talk about, from unemployment to poverty, that can be fixed with an internationally weakened South Africa!
Our defeat of apartheid, our ability to break our chains was due to an internationally strong position. Our development as a democratic African led country, depends on our international strength!
Let us wake up before it is too late!
Anything born out of hatred carries within it the seeds of its own destruction. Therefore my dearest friends, a house built with bricks of hatred will eventually collapse under the weight of its own foundation. Only love, peace, justice and humanity can propel civilisations forward.
May peace be upon you and may we never tire of speaking the language of love, peace, justice and humanity.
I am an African journalist who has covered the continent for 36 years. Today, I want to pay tribute to the South African Police Service for the professional manner in which it policed the anti-immigration protests on Tuesday.
More often than not, we have witnessed brazen and crude police brutality across Africa, from Zimbabwe to Uganda, Nigeria and Kenya. In some instances, the army has even been deployed against civilians, resulting in the killing of protesters, as happened in Zimbabwe in August 2018 and January 2019.
To see an African police service—not a police force—conduct itself with such discipline, professionalism, restraint and humanity is both refreshing and encouraging.
It is a reminder that effective policing does not require violence or brutality, but respect for the law, human dignity and the rights of citizens.
Many police services and forces across the continent could learn valuable lessons from the conduct of the South African Police Service. Maintaining public order and protecting lives are not mutually exclusive.
Well done, SAPS.
Thank very much @sandileswana for your excellent contributions in informing and educating all of us what is happening and what needs to happen to move our country forward. I some of those employed by taxpayers were doing half of your contributions.
There is no national shutdown in RSA. Office parks, malls and factories are running. Taxis are readily available.
Today, 30 June 2026, is officially a normal working day in South Africa, despite widespread social media rumours of a "national shutdown".
The Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on Migration and President Cyril Ramaphosa have explicitly confirmed that schools, businesses, malls, factories, and public services remain open and are operating as routine.
Key Updates on the Situation
Transport Operations: The South African National Taxi Council
(SANTACO) and the National Taxi Alliance have publicly distanced themselves from the shutdown calls, ensuring that minibus taxis are running normally to ferry commuters.
Protest Context: The planned demonstrations are organised by civic groups like March and March centered around anti-illegal immigration demands, rather than an economic or transport strike.
Security Deployment: The South African Police Service (SAPS) and other law enforcement agencies are on high alert with maximum visibility to prevent any road blockades, intimidation, or disruption to public life.
Localised Caution: While the country is functioning, commuters in major CBDs—particularly Johannesburg and Durban—are advised to remain vigilant due to localized high-risk march routes and potential traffic disruptions.
To my African brothers and sisters please keep safe 🙏🏾 Remember that many of us South Africans do not align ourselves with what is currently happening. Ours is the freedom of all Africans from Neo-colonialism and imperialism.
Aluta Continua ✊🏿
Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika!
Friends can be competitors, Canadian Prime Minister @MarkJCarney and I agreed today as he called me so we could, among other
matters, exchange well wishes ahead of South Africa’s knockout #fifaworldcup match against Canada in Los Angeles tomorrow night.
@MarkJCarney and I work together very well on many issues in our bilateral relations and in our roles in the international community but we’ve agreed to disagree on proceedings tomorrow night.
Like all South Africans, I look forward to our Boys dazzling and defeating the Canadians en route to the last 16.
Of course, we wish Canada well as they prepare for 90 challenging minutes of
African football.
Kaofela! Go Bafana Bafana!
I’ll be happy to call the Prime Minister this time.
Thank you for continuing to inspire #BafanaBafana President @CyrilRamaphosa. We remain united behind the team wish them all the best with their next game.
Congratulations to Bafana Bafana on beating Korea 1-0 in Monterrey to make it to the knockout stages of a FIFA World Cup for the first time.
Coach Hugo Broos, and scorer Thapelo Maseko opened the way for South Africa to progress to the group of 32 where an encounter with tournament hosts Canada awaits.
Bafana Bafana displayed an inspired team performance of discipline in defence and precision in their attack.
We remain united and hopeful under our banner that declares “One Nation. One dream. One goal.”
It’s easy and dangerous to inspire violence and hate. The greatest and hardest kind of leadership inspires people to do something beyond the immediate anger. It inspires peace and community.
Happy birthday President Mbeki. You are one of the greatest, the Continent has produced. You will forever be our inspiration as we battle the challenges facing our Continent. You laid the foundation, if others mess, please do not be hard on yourself. Enjoy your day President
This is great news @matthewparkscpt. Please let everyone involved know that there is a great market for South Africa sugar on the Continent. It needs proper strategy and tactics. They can to talk us on the ground for advice and guidance. Thank you.
MEDIA STATEMENT
15 JUNE 2026
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SAFTU MOURNS THE PASSING OF ABDULLAH IBRAHIM A GIANT OF JAZZ CULTURE AND THE LIBERATION STRUGGLE
The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) joins millions of South Africans, Africans and music lovers across the world in mourning the passing of the legendary South African pianist, composer and global jazz icon, Abdullah Ibrahim.
With his passing, South Africa has lost one of its greatest cultural ambassadors, one of the most influential jazz musicians of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and a towering figure whose music gave voice to the hopes, pain, resilience and aspirations of oppressed people everywhere.
Born in District Six, Cape Town, Abdullah Ibrahim emerged from the harsh realities of apartheid to become one of the world’s most respected musicians. Through a remarkable career spanning more than seven decades, he fused African musical traditions, jazz, gospel, spiritual influences and the sounds of working-class communities into a unique and unmistakable musical language that touched hearts across continents.
His music was never merely entertainment. It was a form of resistance.
At a time when apartheid sought to silence the voices of the oppressed, Abdullah Ibrahim used music as a weapon of struggle, memory and hope. His compositions captured the humanity of those who endured forced removals, racial oppression and economic exploitation. His internationally acclaimed work helped expose the brutality of apartheid while celebrating the beauty, dignity and resilience of South Africa’s people.
Few musical compositions have carried the emotional and political significance of his masterpiece, Mannenberg. The song became an unofficial anthem of resistance, echoing through townships, community halls, union gatherings and protest meetings. It inspired generations of activists, workers, students and freedom fighters and remains one of the most important musical contributions to the struggle against apartheid.
Throughout his life, Abdullah Ibrahim demonstrated that artists have a critical role to play in society. He reminded us that culture is not separate from politics, economics and social justice. He understood that music could build bridges between peoples, challenge oppression and inspire collective action.
His work resonated deeply with workers and the poor because it reflected their lived experiences. It spoke of displacement, hardship, longing, dignity and the enduring dream of freedom. In doing so, he became not only a musical giant but also a custodian of the collective memory of our people.
SAFTU pays tribute to a man who never forgot his roots, who carried South Africa’s story to the world, and who used his immense talent in the service of humanity.
As we mourn his passing, we celebrate a life extraordinarily well lived. His music will continue to inspire future generations to dream, create, resist injustice and fight for a more humane and equal world.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, fellow musicians, admirers and all who were touched by his remarkable life and work.
Abdullah Ibrahim may be gone, but the melodies he gifted humanity will continue to echo through the ages.
Hamba Kahle, Son of Africa.
Your music lives on.
Your legacy is immortal.
Issued on behalf of the SAFTU General Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi.

Infelizmente ele escolheu a pessoa errada….
Very, very sad indeed Minister @PatriciaDeLille. He is a legend and icon of our culture and liberation struggle. May his soul rest in eternal peace. His music and memory will live forever in our hearts.
Thank you @AmbPeschke for discharging your responsibility with honour and grace. May the Lord also bless you, your family, colleagues and country. All the best with your future roles.

@dr_zsaul1 Hard work, discipline and genuine commitment to the ideals of @MYANC will result in the resurgence. And only those who pass through "eye of the needle" should make it to the ballot.
@MrksPSLClub Mr McCarthy, please focus on your job, that of ensuring your team qualifies next time for #FifaWorldCup and leave #BafanaBafana issues with those appointed for that assignment. With due respect. Thank you.
We must be careful as a nation that we don't end up "chasing our tails" on this matter. We need to think out the box, to see both challenges and opportunities that immigration presents. In economics as in politics numbers count. Let us use the numbers we have creatively.
I fully agree with former President Thabo Mbeki that the problem of high levels of unemployment cannot be solely attributed to undocumented (illegal) immigrants; fortunately, there is no one who has made such a claim. That is not even a claim made by the leaders of the protest actions, if we closely and carefully listen to them. What they are claiming is that uncontrolled and illegal migration makes it difficult for South African job seekers. This claim is factually correct.
I respectfully disagree with the former President that illegal migration has nothing to do with unemployment. It is a fact that undocumented immgrants are a source of cheap and unprotected labour, what is called unregulated employment. It is also a fact, that this source of employment directly results in labour market distortions and displacement of South African job seekers. It is also a fact that the most affected job seekers by the labour market displacement are the low-skilled and unskilled workers.
Unemployed population in South Africa consists of a mix of skills; which can be broken down into three main categories. The first is HIGHLY SKILLED & GRADUATES UNEMPLOYMENT, this is unemployed graduates who struggle to find entry-level positions that require prior experience. The second is SEMI-SKILLED UNEMPLOYMENT, these are job seekers that have completed secondary education (matric) or specialised vocational training, but their qualifications often do not align with the specific technical trades or digital roles that employers are actively seeking. The third is LOW-SKILLED AND UNSKILLED UNEMPLOYMENT, which constitues a large portion of the unemployed workforce and has low levels of formal education, and are at a severe disadvantage in a modernising economy that increasingly requires advanced or technical capabilities. One does not have to be a rocket scientist to know that the low-skilled and un-skilled category of the unemployed is severely displaced by a labour market that is open to undocumented immigrants.
