🇱🇧 Why Did Joseph Aoun Agree to the Lebanon-Israel “Surrender” Framework?

Hezbollah expert Amal Saad tells Drop Site she believes Lebanon’s leadership must “actually believe… that the U.S. is invincible,” and that the U.S. and Israel will ultimately prevail despite Iran and Hezbollah’s battlefield resilience and what she describes as Iran’s unprecedented “security umbrella” for Lebanon.

“I honestly don’t know to what extent they are that delusional, to think that Iran and Hezbollah have lost, because they clearly haven’t.”

Saad, who taught officers in a joint strategic studies program with the Lebanese Armed Forces for six years, says she also struggles to reconcile former army commander Joseph Aoun’s current position with the military ethos she observed.

Officers routinely referred to Israel as “the enemy” or the “Zionist enemy,” she said. “I am really hard-pressed to imagine how a man who was in that position… is the same person now.”

Similarly, she notes that Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, who served as an ICJ judge in the genocide case against Israel, is now part of a government that has authored an agreement that preemptively absolves Israel of all war crimes committed in Lebanon.

“People of the South have historically always resisted Israel, and they will continue to do so, even if it’s with very basic weapons,” Saad says, even as Lebanon’s leaders are “more than happy” for Israel to “relieve them of this burden called the resistant people of South Lebanon.”
