Diesel prices are getting the headline now but how about harvest being twice as far behind the 5 year average.

It is going to be a winter and spring harvest meaning the grain pipeline is going to be working in real time without any guarantees.

THE METER RIGHT NOW

• Manitoba overall - 40% (5 year average 70%)
• Saskatchewan overall - 32% (5-year average 71%, 10-year 63%, last year 53%)
• Alberta major crops - 22.8% (5-year 57.5%, down 35 points · 10-year 43.4%, down 21)

Canola is the choke point:
• Manitoba canola - 36%
• Saskatchewan canola - 15%
• Alberta canola - 4.4%

Canola is my favorite to watch, this is one of the last crops to come off and the pipeline is already running on fumes.

HISTORICAL HARVEST TO COMPARE

Saskatchewan 2019: mid-September harvest was only 23%. By Sep 17-23 it was still 39% versus a 5-year average near 62%. Canola was only 17% in the bin. That year still finished around 90% by late October, with tough grain into dryers and elevator downgrades from sprouting.

Alberta 2019: as of Sep 17, major crops were 17.7% versus a 5-year average of 31.3%. Canola was 6.3% in the bin. Killing frost hit Sep 30 / Oct 1. Harvest stalled near 89-90% into November-December. About 10% sat under snow and finished in spring 2020 with yield and quality losses on the remainder.

Manitoba 2022: as of Sep 20, harvest was 40% versus a 5-year average of 71% - about three weeks behind. Same headline percentage as Manitoba this week. That year still reached 95% by Oct 25 once dry days returned, but mid-path frost and weathering chewed at quality.

Read those carefully. 2026 versus normal is as bad as, or worse than, those wet mid-Septembers - especially Alberta's gap to average. History does not say the crop is lost. It says the clock is loud, and quality is the second bill that comes due.

This is a late October early November harvest with tough grain going in the bin.
There is no way this is priced into the market.

AAFC will undoubtedly get their yield and production wrong to stabilize food prices because if I were a consumer, I’d be scared shitless of what is potentially ahead.

A new RBC survey found 51% of Canadian parents with adult children are still helping them financially.

Of those helping:

• 56% are paying for groceries
• 24% are helping with rent
• Average support: $6,151 a year

This is the economic reality many families are living.
On October 19, Albertans face a choice.

Option 1: Status quo--Alberta agrees to more of the same from Ottawa.

Option 2: Alberta can do better--Alberta wants change.

Whatever choice Albertans make, the question worth asking is:

Is the economic status quo delivering the future Albertans want for our children?

And the final update to this saga:

I was just at his sentencing. The prosecution had asked for 15 months in prison because of the randomness and aggression in his assault on me and his extremely long history of violent crime (43 prior convictions).

The defense asked for no time because he is black and jail made him sad (yes really).

The judge decided on a “middle ground” sentence of 9 days in jail, of which he will serve 6 days.
