YES: Mamdani's administration just funded New York City's first-ever pet food pantry program.
$750,000 in the FY2027 budget, specifically to help pet owners who can't afford food for their animals. Another $750,000 goes toward affordable spay/neuter services. $1.5 million total, aimed at keeping people and their pets together.
Here's why it matters: NYC animal shelters took in over 16,000 animals last year. Nearly 10,000 were strays. Another 6,500 were owner surrenders — people who loved their pets but couldn't afford to feed them or get them basic vet care, and had to give them up.
Animal welfare advocates had been pushing for this for years, asking for $15.3 million to fully fund pantries, spay/neuter clinics in every borough, and a real animal welfare office. They got a fraction of the ask, But it's the first time the city has put dedicated dollars behind the idea at all.
No family should have to choose between rent and feeding their family — pets included. This is a start.

@tisthepamseason Sorry for deleting/reposting! Typos!
Thanks for using your platform to boost this issue! I don't care that people are arguing theoretical mathematics in the replies. To them I say: this is reality, and if it is not your reality, please just be grateful that you can move on!
@tisthepamseason Trumps plan squanders the potential of every intelligent, motivated, educated person who wasn't born wealthy. It erases the next generation of specialists: professionals whose absence will be felt by our generation. Worst of all, it limits young peoples' ability to dream.
I have several of the same illnesses Halsey has.
I had to turn down tour offers and completely step back from touring because of my health. It took me years to be honest with myself about my limitations. I pushed through pain for a long time because I was terrified of looking weak, becoming a liability, or losing work. I feared that once I admitted what I was dealing with, people would stop hiring me.
The reality is that every time I've been honest about my health, I've worried people would think I'm looking for sympathy or attention. Unfortunately, that fear has been validated more than once. I've been called a liar. I've had former mentors / friends / coworkers spread rumors that I'm “exaggerating my health issues for attention” simply because I stopped pretending I was okay. I went from being healthy, touring, and eager to grow — to sick, bedridden, and struggling with basic daily tasks in what felt like the blink of an eye. It's soul crushing to be part of & love an industry while constantly wondering if you'll ever get back to the person you used to be.
Chronic illness becomes a lens. You experience every part of your life through it because there's no way to separate it from your reality. When your body is in survival mode, your life naturally revolves around that reality.
So when people criticize artists for writing about things like illness and call it "main character syndrome," I don't think they understand what they're asking. Halsey is an artist. Artists write about their experiences. If chronic illness fundamentally shapes your life, of course it's going to show up in your art. She’s not going to pretend the illness doesn’t affect her life as much as it does, or keep that part of her life hidden away like a burden, or create art that ignores one of the most significant things she’s experiencing.
And beyond that, this kind of honesty matters. The vulnerability it takes to speak openly about chronic illness and serious health issues has genuinely helped people feel less alone. It's helped people find answers, seek diagnoses, advocate for themselves, and realize they're not the only ones struggling. I know seeing other people speak openly about their experiences has helped me make sense of my own. Had Halsey never spoken publicly about her diagnoses, getting diagnosed myself would have been even more delayed than it already was. We as women already go through so much dismissal, gaslighting, harm, and negligence in the medical field.
It’s ironic to criticize artists like Halsey. That honesty doesn’t just tell their story but it helps others survive theirs.
Fuck you @theneedledrop you’re such a goddamn fucking loser and lazy fucking “critic”.
