I am a 7th Grade Science teacher, Team Leader, PLC Leader, School Improvement Chair, and Science Department Chair at Githens Middle School. GO RAIDERS!
Last week, I was awarded $4034.00 for a set of Sphero robots and some accessories thanks to Toshiba! I am so excited to see this project fully come to life. It is something that I have been working towards since November of 2023. Phases 1 & 2 were to acquire a total of 8 Amazon Fire Tablets through @DonorsChoose in order to allow for an easier coding experience for the kiddos. (Thank you to all that donated to those 2 projects!) I am so excited to bring this new experience into my classroom for my kiddos! This will get kids writing more in science and allow them to "construct their explanation" per the state standard, then, collaborate with their group to choose the explaination they want to code. Students will code the robot to go to different points on a diagram of content we are studying and have it tell their explanation. I am looking forward to finding all of the ways that I can incorporate these into my classroom. Thank you @ToshibaAmerica for supporting my classroom and saying "yes" to my grant proposal! @gms_raiders
Last week, students took a journey as a drop of water and then summarized their journey. They later used water cycle diagrams to map out one journey from their group using our Sphero robots. The kids had so much fun coding the robot to move along their journey and coding it to speak. A huge thank you to @ToshibaAmerica and @DonorsChoose for helping me secure funding for the materials for this endeavor. I did not have one single complaint from students about having to write in science! π@gms_raiders
Exploring how circuits work with Snap Circuits. There are 4 basic challenges they are completing today to explore the basic concepts of what is needed for electricity to flow. @gms_raiders
Determining energy transformations with a card sort activity to reinforce our notes from yesterday before we move on to our article for today. @gms_raiders#TheRaiderWay
7th graders saw the effects of what vaping can do to your lung cells, courtesy of Tetrahymena, during the respiratory system section of our human body unit. Thank you @NCSTA for having this session at your 2023 conference, Assett program @WUSTL for providing the materials for this experience for our 7th graders, and @TheScienceHouse for presenting this at 2023 NCSTA. I even shared with our staff after school in our faculty meeting. A wonderful and eye opening experience for all and looking forward to doing it all again next year. @gms_raiders #TheRaiderWay #sciencerocks
π Congratulations to Crystal Cahill of Githens Middle School for being selected as Durham Public Schools Assistant Principal of the Year! π Your dedication and leadership are truly commendable, and we're proud to have you representing our district. #WeAreDPS
7th graders circled back to respiratory system and learned about the effects of vaping on cells. Thank you @TheScienceHouse for bringing the awareness to the @NCSTA conference and the Asset Program at @WUSTL for providing the materials. Our kids enjoyed it! @gms_raiders
7th graders are finishing up our stations lab this week with building artificial urinary systems to show how this systems works to clean the blood and get rid of the impurities. @gms_raiders#WeAreDPS
Ready to go and write some grants and try to get some of the cool science things Iβve seen in the vendor hall to use with out students! I took lots of notes.π€π»π€π»@NCSTA
