@bstr__ Probs cause it's easier to criticize someone behind a screen and in anonymity compared to saying something to their face. Sadly, online hate has become so normal that everyone feels entitled to leave a hatefully comment not worrying about the consequences. #selfsocietyclass
@JulesRutgers Social media builds standards that people focus too much in following. These are making younger generations (and everyone in general) insecure about themselves, not letting them build their own personality rather than copying someone else's behavior, etc. #selfsocietyclass
@amorin_faith I do believe that social media has twisted the meaning of relationships. Influencers show their love lives as perfect, only a few show the reality of being in a relationship. This leads to younger generations to expect relationships to be 'perfect'. #selfsocietyclass
What do you think is a real solution to these problems other than avoiding reading the negative/hate comments? Or do you know of any mechanisms that are already being used by a social media platform? #selfsocietyclass (2/2)
Violent comments & online harassment in social media have been happening for a very long time (The Guardian & Feminist Media Studies), but not many platforms are doing much to stop this. Users are told to 'ignore/stop' looking at these violent comments #selfsocietyclass (1/2)
@jangelicaa21 I am not very familiar with Twitch, but I have seen this a lot going on with Influencers and public figures, mainly now during quarantine. This is a good example of online harassment because fake news are being shared to the public that hurt the influencer #selfsocietyclass
@SpyrkaK It's crazy how many negative comments can be seen in people's profiles. The sad part is that they are told to ignore them, as 'The dark side of Guardian comments' highlights, but how can you ignore them when there are so many coming your way :( #selfsocietyclass
@Enrico60295272 That is awful! The article 'The Dark Side of Guardian Comments' does mention something like this. Online harassment can turn into 'real life' harassment cause others start creating fake social media or dating apps accounts in order to keep on disturbing others #selfsocietyclass
What is very sad is that, as the article 'The Dark Side of Guardian Comments' highlights, most of these people being harassed are told to 'ignore', 'not read' the comments, rather than somehow solving the issue of hate comments, among other things (2/2) #selfsocietyclass
Individuals in social media, specially influencers, receive lot of online harassment. An example is people harassing others due to their body weight/image. This Instagram post shows a perfect example. (1/2) https://t.co/rNNy0kBqqG

@Michael_RU20 I would have never thought of snapchat and bitmojis as an example for this assignment, good one! This app has become a relevant way of communication in social virtual words as it lets you chat with people from all over the world, people you know and you don't #selfsocietyclass
@LaygoClaudine I have never used Club Penguin, but many of my friends had! I think it's really interesting that from virtual games people can communicate from different countries in different time zones & simultaneously #selfsocietyclass
@ParthB64214519 Is this a game that you need of your team in order to go from level to level? As Sanchez mentions the game 'EverQuest' that required team and collaboration in order for the users to success (p. 11) #selfsocietyclass
Users can communicate online and talk with each other with the purpose of accomplishing a task, creating a strong social system (Sanchez 2009). (2/2) #selfsocietyclass
"Rust" is a social virtual videogame w/ the purpose of 'surviving' in it. My little brother plays it with his friends, and as Sanchez highlights 'players enter an online...world where they can interact with many other players and assume role-playing...' (1/2) #selfsocietyclass
@MelanieRutgers I haven't read about them before, but will for sure take a look! This looks like a good example for a counterpublic, because it allow women to communicate and share info with people that have their same ideologies and beliefs #selfsocietyclass
@rraz2299 @AMarch4OurLives Social networking is relevant for topics like this one, this is a great example. It has such an impact in not only the US, but it also brought attention to many other countries thanks to the topic being mentioned in so many different social media platforms #selfsocietyclass
Renninger highlights that social networking services -online communications- are important for counterpublics because there are not many other places where these people (the members) can discuss their equal ideologies, thoughts, etc. (p. 14) #selfsocietyclass (2/2)
#NiUnaMenos is a feminist movement in Latin America that campaigns against gender violence & more. They communicate their events/rallies and keep connected thru posts on Twitter, Facebook & other social networking services. #selfsocietyclass (1/2)
@chuyuan_chen The one I chose also focuses on this relevant topic. As Renninger highlights, it is relevant that counterpublics are able to 'organize their information as well as instances of communication' with the purpose of campaigning for important matters like this one. #selfsocietyclass
