I appreciate Josh sharing his perspective. It’s clear he values professionalism and honoring commitments, which is admirable.

That said, it’s worth noting that Josh’s situation- including a $185K signing bonus from his Nashville Entry Level contract - gives him financial stability that most ECHL players don’t have. His experience may not reflect what the majority are facing.

The PHPA has been negotiating since 2021, working toward basics like livable wages, adequate housing, and proper equipment (standards that exist in other professional leagues).

Yes, players signed contracts for this season. But saying “they knew what they signed up for” ignores that when your options are accept inadequate conditions or give up your career entirely, that’s not really a free choice. Workers in every industry deserve basic standards, regardless of what previous contracts said.

Most ECHL players are living paycheck to paycheck while pursuing their passion. Josh’s financial cushion allows him a perspective that, while valid for his situation, doesn’t capture the daily reality many of his peers are navigating (choosing between hockey and being able to afford basic expenses).

The goal isn’t to break contracts.. it’s to build a system where players can actually afford to honor them long-term without sacrificing their financial stability and overall wellbeing.
