British oil giant Shell announced its latest energy transition strategy update, revealing a shift in its near-term carbon emissions reduction goals. While maintaining its commitment to becoming a net-zero company by the middle of the century, Shell now aims to reduce its net carbon intensity on third-party product usage by 15% to 20% by 2030, down from its previous target of 20%.

The company cited uncertainty in the pace of the energy transition for dropping its 2035 goal of a 45% reduction. CEO Wael Sawan emphasized a strategic shift in the power business, leading to lower growth in overall power sales, prompting the update in carbon intensity targets. Shell noted significant progress, having achieved over 60% of its target to halve emissions from operations by 2030 by the end of 2023.

Additionally, it successfully reduced the net carbon intensity of energy products sold last year by 6.3% compared to 2016, marking the third consecutive year of hitting this target. Shell also unveiled a new target to decrease customer emissions from product use by 15% to 20% by the end of the decade, compared with 2021.
