Britain bought eight hundred thousand slaves. In one purchase.🇬🇧🪙⛓️

If you paid British taxes before 2015, you helped them do it.

The British Empire. 1833.

England itself had rejected slavery over sixty years ago. But across the Empire, it was thriving.

For decades, ordinary people had been fighting to end it. They signed petitions. They marched. They boycotted sugar picked by enslaved hands.

Three hundred thousand families.

They forced Parliament to listen.

Years of legal battles lay ahead. The slave owners would fight every one. So Britain chose the fastest possible way.

They bought them.

Every single one. Twenty million pounds. Forty percent of the entire national budget.

Then set them free.

The loan was so large it took a hundred and eighty-two years to pay off. It was finally paid in 2015.

If you paid taxes before that year, your money helped make that happen.

The Treasury tweeted this in 2018. They called it a Friday fact.

Then they deleted it.

They were embarrassed by it.
