UNDERSTANDING HYPERTENSION (Blood Pressure higher than the normal limits) Hi, let's talk about Hypertension. But in order for you to understand what Hypertension is, your firstly need to know what determines Blood Pressure. Blood Pressure is determined by two things: 1. The force of blood pumped by the heart. • the greater the force = the higher the blood pressure = Hypertension. 2. The amount of resistance in the blood vessels. • the more resistance there is on the blood vessel = the higher the blood pressure = Hypertension. For you to understand Hypertension, picture a hose pipe attached to the tap (the tap being the heart, the hose pipe being the blood vessels and the water being the blood. When you turn on the faucet of your tap (heart), the water (blood) will flow smoothly. But the more you keep on turning the faucet to allow more water to come out, is the more the pressure builds in the hose pipe (blood vessel). In another way, if a hose pipe (blood vessel) constrict due to temperature changes or if you pinch it at the tip, the water (blood) is going to flow at a higher than normal pressure. You need to take note that blood cary oxygen and nutrients to organs such as your brain and kidneys via blood vessels. When the blood flows at a higher than normal pressure, it damages those organs that it suppose to feed that blood full of oxygen and nutrients. Picture using a pinched hose pipe versus a free flowing hose pipe when watering your plants, the pinched hose pipe will erode the soil surrounding the plants and even damage the plant itself on direct impact because the water flows at a higher than normal pressure. This high-pressure flowing blood affect organs in the following way: 1. It can lead to a Stroke on the Brain 2. It can lead to Kidney Injury (Renal Failure) on the Kidneys. 3. It can lead to Loss of Vision on the Eyes. 4. It can lead to a Heart Attack due to the affected blood vessels supplying the heart with blood. 5. It can lead to the bulging, weakening and leaking (sometimes bursting) of the blood vessels and that will affect blood transportation to some organs (picture a worn out hose pipe with a bulge and leaking water through its wall.) 6. Since some blood vessels are tiny and fragile, like the ones in the penis, the turn to get clogged or burst easy, leading to Erectile Dysfunction. 7. Similar to women, it can lead to poor flow of blood to the vagina, leading to Vaginal Dryness. There is no known cure for Hypertension, but there are several contributory factors that can lead to Hypertension, such as: 1. Diet - eating raw salt, high salt concentrated and fatty food. 2. Lifestyle - lack of exercising, abusing alcohol and smoking nicotine products. 3. Mental health - depression, frequent anxiety and stress Ould lead to Hypertension. 4. Health condition - some diseases such as Diabetes Mellitus and Obesity do lead to Hypertension. 5. Drugs - recreational drugs like cocaine, injectables like steroids and even medications like prednisone can lead to Hypertension. 6. Genetics - genetic disorders like Liddle Syndrome or the history of someone in your family having Hypertension can put you at risk of developing one. Hypertension cannot be transferred from one person to the other, it shows no early symptoms until it's late and the damage is already done. so eat healthy, exercise regularly, avoid engaging in the contributory factors I have mentioned above.
