That’s part of it.

This is one of the first business closures where the owners have been candid about what's happening.

Portland has faced significant economic and demographic challenges over the past several years, including a net population decline of 20k+ that has reduced the customer base for many local businesses.

Restaurants, bars, and neighborhood shops depend on regular customers with discretionary income, and when that base shrinks, it's much harder to stay afloat.

At the same time, many small business owners are dealing with sharply higher insurance premiums, rising labor costs, increasing food and beverage costs, and a growing number of taxes and regulatory fees.

For many, those costs have outpaced revenue growth.

What people often misunderstand is that most neighborhood bar owners and small business owners aren't wealthy.

They're middle-class people whose business is their job.

Every increase in payroll costs, inventory costs, insurance, rent, or city fees comes directly out of what they take home.

Unlike a salaried employee, they absorb those increases personally.

Eventually, there comes a point where the financial return no longer justifies the long hours, stress, and risk of owning the business.

For many owners, that's when they decide it's time to close.

An underage girl from Mesa, Ariz. who went missing in May has finally been found by U.S. Marshals at a homeless encampment called "The Jungle" in Olympia, Wash. The child may be a sex trafficking victim.
