It is entirely understandable that a Muslim should wish to have seen the Holy Prophet (sa) and witnessed his life firsthand. Yet Hazrat Miqdad ibn Amr (ra) offered a thought-provoking warning: we cannot know how we would have behaved had we lived in that time.
Some people saw the Holy Prophet (sa) with their own eyes and still rejected him. For others, accepting him meant going against the closest family ties. From fourteen centuries away, the choices seem clearer. Yet each generation must answer for itself.
Perhaps, instead of asking what we would have done in the past, we should ask ourselves: How do we respond when faith calls upon us today?
Muslims of earlier centuries also longed to witness another blessed age: the era of the Promised Messiah and Mahdi. Many pious people prayed and searched for him, yet passed away without finding what their hearts yearned for.
We Ahmadis, by the grace of Allah, have recognised the one foretold in these prophecies and pledged our allegiance to him.
But this immeasurable blessing carries a profound responsibility. The Promised Messiah (as) wrote:
“Rejoice and be happy that the field of achieving nearness to God is vacant.”
That opportunity demands sincere effort: fulfilling the rights of Allah and mankind, striving for righteousness, keeping promises, serving others and overcoming resentment. Our test is what we do with the blessing we have received.
As Imam al-Ghazali (rh) reminds us, every breath is a priceless jewel. We often imagine the day we wish we had been given, but what if today is the day we had begged to be given back?
Allah did not place us in seventh-century Mecca. He placed us here, with prayers to offer, promises to honour and opportunities to serve.
Perhaps the wish “If only I had been there” needs another question beside it:
Now that I am here, what will I do?

Secularism vs Religion — What Is More Needed?
Can a society thrive without religion, or does religion provide something secularism cannot?
Secularism and religion offer different approaches to morality, community, personal meaning, and the organisation of society. This topic examines the strengths, challenges, and different roles of both, and asks whether they are truly opposites or can coexist.
A deeper look at one of the most important debates about faith, society, and human values.
