This is understandable: absent any other lever, I can understand why people want to speculate and try to get to the bottom of the issue.

However, much of it is incorrect, myopic, and uninformed. Please keep that in mind as you read what people have to say and form your own opinion or act hastily.

Myself and others have been asked to help with the forensics. I'm limiting what I say publicly until we have a complete picture, but rest assured, I will write an independent after action report that attempts to make everything crystal clear, similar to what I wrote for the pig-chain incident last year.

This incident will certainly need to be paired with acute accountability; but accountability and pitchforks are not the same thing.

Mithril signer 1.0.0: production-ready on @Cardano mainnet

The Mithril signer has reached version 1.0.0, its first stable release, delivered with the 2617.0 distribution. It is now officially production-ready on the Cardano release-mainnet network.

This milestone follows nearly three years of continuous development. Since the mainnet beta launch in July 2023, the signer has been progressively improved, hardened, and validated in production by the community of stake pool operators running it on release-mainnet.

Version 1.0.0 reflects that the software now meets the bar for stability and operational maturity across four dimensions:

Stability: a settled public API, configuration model, and operational behavior

Performance: validated across supported platforms, including Linux x86_64 and Linux ARM64

Security: the outcome of many iterations of review and hardening of the signing pipeline

Reliability: suitable for long-running production deployments on release-mainnet

From this release onward, the Mithril signer adopts semantic versioning. Any backward-incompatible changes will be communicated in advance through dedicated dev blog posts, giving operators clear visibility into upgrade implications.

Operators running a signer on release-mainnet or release-preprod should upgrade to 1.0.0 as part of the 2617.0 distribution rollout. No configuration changes are required.

Thanks to the stake pool operators who have run the Mithril signer and contributed feedback since its earliest iterations. This stable release is a direct result of their engagement and of the collaboration that continues to strengthen the Cardano ecosystem.

Hot take:

It was always the community of builders behind it.

After spending time with a bunch of Cardano OGs recently, I got to relive the enthusiasm that made me start building here years ago.

Dolos, Pallas, Oura, Aiken, Mithril… none of these came from Twitter drama.

They came from people who believed Cardano was worth building.

I have just successfully executed end to end what I believe is the first example of selective disclosure privacy capabilities on Cardano.

After weeks of hurdles, and what has honestly felt like months of problem solving, I now have a working approach that can support a wider range of privacy based disclosure use cases on Cardano.

The important part is the architecture. A user can prove something about themselves, or their on chain position, without exposing more information than is actually required.

That opens up practical use cases around gated access, governance access, delegation based verification, eligibility checks, and privacy preserving interactions.

There is still more work to do, but this feels like a meaningful step forward.

Privacy on Cardano is starting to become very real.

A huge milestone for Cardano that I will be pushing forwards as much as I can, and the capabilities are down to the hard work from all the engineers involved and a reminder that funding these activities is essential to Cardano's future growth.

Verifying that a Cardano transaction happened, from inside a Cardano smart contract, has needed a trusted oracle. A contract sees its own inputs and nothing else. It has no access to chain history, no way to check that some other transaction was ever included. Someone has to tell it, and the contract has to trust them.

It no longer does.
