He's gone.
Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, the President of Confederation of African Athletics since 2003 has passed away, today, and probably at the worst possible time. The 24th Senior Africa Athletics Championship that began on the 12th to the 17th of May 2026 in Ghana, is probably the last nail on his disastrous leadership at the Dakar-based organization. The championships got off to a chaotic start in Accra, with athletes and journalists raising concerns over poor accommodation, food shortages, and inadequate working conditions despite the event attracting some of the continent’s top track and field stars. It mirrors his chaotic and dictatorial leadership at Confederation of African Athletics, which has lagged behind in the last decade. The Cameroonian military man never cared about the sport in Africa or the welfare of the athletes. He was mostly concerned with the optics of power and the trappings of it, which ensured he enjoyed some status and privilege in his home country. Since he took over from Lamine Diack in 2003, be he blocked reforms at CAA and refused to adapt to the changing realities of the time. Sponsors fled and the federation bled, now even unable to host an African Championship worthy of its name. The 2024 African Athletics Championships in Cameroon was probably an audit of his incompetence in his own home country, following a scandalous edition in Assaba, Nigeria in 2018. Long rejected by Olympians at Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), Hamad Kalkaba Malboum was left isolated and lonely in his sunset years as he battled illness in Cameroon. African Athletics will not miss Hamad Kalkaba Malboum. Natural selection process has liberated the Confederation of African Athletics from the yolk of self-strangulation and stagnation. The Confederation of African Athletics Elective Congress must nurse the association to the next polls in 2027, with a view to identifying the best leadership for the troubled outfit. CAA Senior Vice President and Athletics Kenya Chief Jackson Tuwei, currently in Ghana, must be confirmed as the new head until the next polls are called. A new dawn for African Athletics should start immediately as there is no time to waste. The starter's gun is misfiring and athletes poles are breaking mid-air at the current African Senior Athletics Championships in Ghana, anyway. Commiseration to his family.
I hate to do this. I really hate to do it but this has been an absolute farce.
What is an athletic meet without the times the athletes finished? How are we as journalist supposed to tell the stories? How do we know how well they have done here in comparison to what they did in other meets? Athletes finish races and are asking for their times and it’s crickets…
Why do we do this to ourselves? We have known about organising this for so long and couldn’t get the most basic thing of an athletics meet right.
There is no space for the media to work (media centre), the media tribune had Jama singers screaming so much you can’t hear a thing or focus to do your job.
We had 7 100m men’s heats today and the starting gun faltered about 4 times - affecting the athletes. It’s a shame.
Check the YouTube stream and see how everyone is ridiculing us. The incompetence is glaring and someone has to do their job.
Hopefully the next few days are better because this is to put it mildly a circus.

One of the objectives of this competition is to select athletes to represent 🇪🇹 at the WA U20 Champs to be held in Oregon, USA, from August 5 - 9, 2026, the task of accurately identifying athletes who meet the required age criteria remains a major challenge for the federation.
On the third day of the 14th Under-20 and 5th Under-18 Ethiopian Athletics Championships, the Ethiopian Athletics Federation has issued the following statement on its official social media page regarding age issue:
There are indications that the long-standing issue of age fraud has continued unabated due to the negligence of regional and club sports leaders and the weak Ethiopian Athletics Federation’s regulatory system that is not based on a self-organized database.
