I think everyone who works in a primary school accepts that the curriculum is overloaded. We simply can't squeeze in everything that we're supposed to. However, there are two things that we must try and ensure take place each day: class storytime and independent reading.

As @frankcottrell_b says in the article, the solution is in our hands. Stop closing libraries. Retain school librarians and employ many more. Fund author visits to schools. Publishers, stop throwing cash at celebrities and focus instead on engaging young readers. We can fix this.

@MrsSMaughan @AllieEsiri £2 per week. Each year, I raise between £800-£1000 for new books for our school. It is a nominal fee which is less than half the price of the after school provision. Bursaries for those who need it.

@MrsSMaughan @AllieEsiri We don’t have a budget for books, so I use funds raised from running a weekly bookclub for which I charge a nominal fee. I buy books throughout the year with the proceeds.

@MrsSMaughan @AllieEsiri I just buy books for each class for each school day in December, wrap them, and write the date on the front. Mix of holiday books (including other religions), picture books, chapter books, poetry. The kids get very excited. Share all or part of the book during story time.
