up next!
another one of my anticipated releases of the year! close sources say it is a five star read..tear jerking, even!
a crime story centered on religious fanaticism, which is a theme i’ve been keen to read more about, & since i adore piñerio, im confident this will deliver
i think the second half, leading to the ending was nauseating in how everyone fails the fmc. the ending is gross, sure, but i found it more sad than anything. liked the prose. overall, it was compelling in places, but also tiring to get through
about halfway through this book on society’s contradictory relationship with consumption and fatness. started off interesting, though it’s starting to feel a little repetitive. still, im getting really curious about the much hyped ending, which many have said is gross
@followingmybody yess thats what made me pick it up sooner lmao.. it touches on a sensitive topic and i can see why the way the main character is deliberately portrayed can turn people away

@judyylino idk why but he stays getting whacked??(atleast from what shows up on my tl😭)from what i gathered today, this time hes getting wacked for dropping pride and prejudice.
i’ve always scrolled past the hate train and never read his books so im clueless and getting real nosy now
much of the novel unfolds through the teen’s eyes and we watch the older woman, juju, grapple with the ‘08 economic crash, her survival tied to the patronage of wealthy men. the brutality of her life is depicted in stark, painful imagery. despite that, i came away underwhelmed…
current read~
one of my anticipated reads of this year! upon reading the blurb, it reminded me a bit of mieko kawakami’s sisters in yellow- a runaway teen meets a charismatic older woman. im also picking up themes of survival, betrayal, class &trauma. def right up my alley
@floretide god loved the atmosphere and the places that were described, the diner, beaches, the apartment complex he stayed in!! i remember having to read it only in broad daylight bc dix was absolutely terrifying😭
NYRB Classics has a charming selection, but can we talk more about their crime fiction/noir? Four of my favorites so far. Gritty, rhythmic, at times witty—badly need more stories in this vein.
