Considering that health might be made up of some factors that are difficult to measure with *numbers* is math. Mental health is a great lurking variable for the BMI problem, and I'd want every mathematician in my class to ask a question that would lead them to that conclusion.

Often I'm confronted with the dissonance between what my friends, non-math-teacher-colleagues, and random-people think is math, and I what I know to be math.

Calculating tip at lunch is arithmetic; asking "what is a living wage?" and tipping towards that is closer to math.

Calculating BMI is arithmetic; asking "who came up with this, and why are we basing a measure of health for all people on the bodies of white men?" Is math. Coming up with a better alternative to BMI is math. Identifying the variables that can measure aspects of health is math.
