Children growing up in cities often have fewer encounters with environmental microbes, especially when most of their time is spent indoors.
A Finnish proof-of-principle study tested a simple idea: adding forest soil to entrance rugs inside urban homes.
Researchers found that this increased the presence of forest-associated bacteria in indoor air, especially near the rugs at infants’ breathing height. Some changes were linked to microbial patterns associated with lower asthma risk, though the researchers note that more studies are needed to confirm health benefits.
It is an early but important reminder: microbial diversity in the environment can play a role in human wellbeing.

Nitrogen is one of the most important nutrients for plant growth, yet most modern crops rely heavily on synthetic fertilizers to access it. While these inputs increase yields, their production and excessive use can place pressure on ecosystems and soil health.
Scientists are now exploring ways to enable staple crops to naturally fix nitrogen with the help of microbes. If this research succeeds, it could open new possibilities for reducing fertilizer use while supporting more resilient agricultural systems.

By 2050, up to 90% of Earth's soil could be degraded.
The good news? We already know the solution… Ensuring that soil has a minimum of 3-6% soil organic matter (based on regional conditions) is the way forward. 🌱

Mangrove ecosystems play a critical role in coastal protection, biodiversity, and long-term carbon storage. However, assessing their recovery after degradation or restoration has often been difficult because consistent measurement systems are lacking.
Researchers are now developing a soil health index designed specifically for mangrove environments. By tracking indicators such as carbon retention, nutrient cycling, and soil chemistry, this approach could help improve how restoration efforts are evaluated and managed.

Kazakhstan Makes History with Landmark Soil Protection Law!
"Soil is not just dirt; it is a living entity" - this has been at the heart of the Save Soil movement. On 8 July 2026, it also became the foundation of a landmark law in Kazakhstan when President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed the country's first Law on Soil Protection, recognizing soil as an independent natural body and committing to its restoration, protection, fertility, and long-term monitoring 🪱🌏
The journey began in 2023, when Save Soil volunteer Alma set out to make a soil law a reality for Kazakhstan, inspired by the founder Sadhguru’s vision ✨
Working with scientists, FAO, the Ministries of Agriculture and Ecology, Majilis (Parliament) and the Senate, the Scientific, Technical and Policy teams at Save Soil helped provide scientific evidence and comparative policy analyses that supported the bill through four rigorous stages of review 📊
From the Senator's proposal, to the Prime Minister, to its final presidential approval, the law stands as a testament to what committed citizens, science, and policymaking can achieve together 💚🌱

While some stories reach for the sky, ours has been unfolding on the ground—scaling up in a different way. From building one of the world's largest nurseries to reaching thousands of farmers across the Cauvery basin, our team is hitting new milestones.
No harnesses, just a lot of heart, 8.5 million saplings, and some very hardworking feet on the ground.
See what "new heights" looks like for us! 🌍✨

The way land is managed today can influence soil health for decades. Soil carbon is one of the most important indicators of long-term land vitality, affecting fertility, structure, and water retention.
Research shows that practices such as reduced tillage, organic amendments, and diverse cropping systems can gradually build carbon in the ground. Over time, these approaches strengthen soil health and support more resilient agricultural systems.

Can national policy improve soil health? In recent decades, China has implemented programs aimed at protecting farmland and restoring degraded land across the country.
These initiatives combine soil monitoring, improved nutrient management, and sustainable farming practices. Long-term strategies like these highlight how coordinated efforts can help improve soil conditions while supporting agricultural productivity.

Forest air activates your cancer-fighting cells. Japan built a whole medical science around this.
Trees produce compounds called phytoncides — antimicrobial chemicals they release to protect themselves. When we breathe them in, our Natural Killer (NK) cells activate — the body's primary defense against cancer and viruses. A single forest trip keeps these cells elevated for up to 30 days. Research also found that forests shift the nervous system from fight-or-flight to restfulness — the same shift as meditation. Dr. Qing Li has spent decades documenting this. Japan listened.
Have you ever stepped into a forest and felt something quiet inside? What did you notice? Let us know in the comments 👇

As the world focuses on solutions to the environmental challenges we face, it is important to recognize one of the fundamental foundations of life on Earth: soil.
The soil crisis is a silent emergency impacting nearly every aspect of life on earth. As land degradation accelerates, its effects are already being felt globally - lowered agricultural yields threaten food security, loss of soil structure leads to increased flooding and droughts, and the habitat loss for the biodiversity within soil itself triggers ecosystem collapse.
That being said, equally overlooked is soil’s potential as a climate solution. As one of the world’s most significant carbon sinks, healthy soil supports carbon sequestration, water retention, and helps restore ecosystem balance.
By restoring life to the soil - for instance through regenerative agriculture or reforestation - we’re protecting the very foundation of life on earth.

‘Healthy soil is the foundation of everything I do.’
Working with the land has been a lifelong relationship for Lydia Mantella - a medicinal herbalist, smallholder, and storyteller whose work sits at the intersection of soil, plants, and wellbeing. In this conversation on Save Soil News, we explore how Lydia’s lifelong involvement with soil - shaped by growing up on a smallholding and deepened through the practice of herbalism - has shaped her perspective on everything from wellbeing, to creativity, and sustainability. We delved into what it really means to work with plants rather than extract from them, and why reconnecting people to the land is such an important step toward caring for it.

Not all soil is created equal.
A little more shade.
A few more earthworms.
A little more organic matter.
A different way of farming.
Small changes above ground can transform what happens below it.
