I have been following Solomon Serwanjja and how he is transforming Bamutakudde village, and it reminded me of another Ugandan who decided that his village did not have to remain poor forever.

His name is Ojok Okello.

In 2019, Okello began transforming Okere Mom-Kok, a war-ravaged village in Northern Uganda, into what he calls Okere City.

And this is not just a name.

Okere now has solar electricity, clean water, a school, health centre, village bank, market, businesses and community projects. Its shea butter cooperative has helped rural women increase their incomes.

The idea was so radical that The Guardian newspaper profiled it, calling it a city built on “solar, shea butter and people power.”

In 2024, Cornell University highlighted Okello's work as an experiment in building the African rural villages of the future.

Today, the ecosystem serves about 10,000 people in Okere and surrounding villages.

I see two Ugandans. Two villages.

And perhaps one powerful lesson:

We can be the change we want to see. Small beginnings can be powerful.

I was dismissive of Serwanja and his ilk being LC1s. I didn't know he had massive plans.

May God protect him and may many more elites transform their villages like he is doing.

My heart is full. Here to celebrate little wins.

Every Saturday we clean Bamutakudde village together and it's beginning to pay off. Streets are cleaner, homes are cleaner, mindsets are changing. Today we agreed to start sorting waste: recyclables and non-recyclables. Recyclables will be sold, decomposing waste will feed our gardens.

Small steps. Big future.
