So very honored to be presenting on Supporting Caregiving Systems at the 7th Kennedy Krieger Biennial Trauma Conference in Maryland this week. Trauma integration, healing & connection for youth & families with trauma exposures #ACES#ResiliencyFactors
Nyomi Davis, a participant in the Foster Youth Internship Program recommends that Congress reintroduce the Trauma-Informed Care Act, and add a requirement of 25 hours of training on post-traumatic stress disorder, and other trauma-informed resources.

The more a child’s resources are depleted to begin with, or the child is affected by hidden stresses while working on a problem or finds a problem itself stressful, the more quickly an intolerable peak is reached.
The ACEs Aware Initiative is a first-in-the nation effort to screen patients for Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) with the lofty goal of reducing ACEs and toxic stress by half in one generation.
Understanding the science of #SelfReg allows me to hear what's going on inside my child's body, what's going on inside their brain. It changes everything, not just what I say but it changes my affect cues, those unconscious messages I'm sending to a child.
The science of Self-Reg is exploding around us. Supporting young people's self-regulation is partly what we do know, but also learning what we don't know. That's where #SelfReg can help us. #AlwaysLearning
With the 5 steps, I'm helping the child to get to calm, but I'm not going to separate them in a detention room and say, "here are the five steps". I have to exercise this regulating function through my touch, through my voice, because they cannot get there on their own. #SelfReg
What I want is for children to feel #calm. But I can't do that unless I can feel what the child is feeling. It's not a cognitive issue. I can't feel what the child is feeling by memorizing a list of signs of hyper arousal. I can only feel it, if that limbic channel is opened.
A dramatic change results when we start to think in terms of behaviour as a reflection of self-regulation in response to stress, arousal and energy levels, rather than in terms of self-control and compliance.
Be cautious of single issue assessments, e.g. just for 'autism', 'ADHD', 'learning difficulties' or 'attachment'. A single lens can miss important strengths & weaknesses, contexts & influences and can muddy diagnosis/formulation.
Check out @booksmiles1. An awesome organization that is getting books into the hands, homes and hearts of students who need them most. @jodi_mahoney @MrsCinLibrary @sfehte_SBSD
I lovveee this article. Its full of common sense tips that are not commonly practiced. My top 3 favs
1. Be a listener not a lecturer
2. Be her ally (learn about her experience and support her or join her in her interests)
3. Model healthy relationships

We need to stop talking about the culture of Child Welfare and start shining a light on the behavior of child welfare. We treat parents, children and families with respect and we speak about them with respect when they are not in the room. If you are unable to do that, move on.
“Trauma is not a flaw or a weakness.
It is a highly effective tool of safety and survival.
Trauma is also not an event.
Trauma is the body’s protective response to an event—
or a series of events—
hat it perceives as potentially dangerous.”
― Resmaa Menakem,
Despite how it might appear, explosive behaviours do not arrive out of nowhere; there is always a build-up of stresses, possibly going as far back as the womb. #Parents#Reframe
