We are saddened by the passing of former Braves third baseman Bob Horner.
The first overall pick in the 1978 MLB Draft, Horner made the jump straight to the Majors without playing a single day in the Minors.
Just ten days after being drafted, Horner made his MLB debut and homered off future Hall of Famer Bert Blyleven. Horner went on to blast 23 home runs in just 89 games and won NL Rookie of the Year honors.
He went on to top the 30-homer mark three times in the next four years and was a National League All-Star in 1982, when he helped lead the Atlanta Braves to a division title.
Horner spent 9 of his 10 Major League seasons with the Braves. He made history on July 6, 1986 when he slugged a record-tying 4 home runs in one game. It was the only four-homer game of the 1980s.
Horner completed his college career at Arizona State with the most home runs in NCAA history, a mark since broken. He was named MVP of the 1977 College World Series and was the very first winner of the prestigious Golden Spikes Award in 1978.
He was 68 years old.
9/21/96 - One year after a 77-28 loss, #17 #ASU upset #1 Nebraska 19-0 in front of 74,089 at Sun Devil Stadium, snapping Nebraska 26-game winning streak. ASU recorded safeties in the 1st , 2nd, and 4th Q's. @snakestakes (20-26 for 292yds). ASU jumped from #17 to #6. #ForksUp
So #12 Arizona State loses on the last play @ Mississippi State (who is now 27th in votes) and drops completely out of the rankings. Then wins a great game @ Baylor.
Illinois loses by 53 POINTS and still gets to be ranked instead of ASU
Make it make sense.
Loretta was a supremely talented actor. She deserved all her 10 EMMY nominations and her 2 wins. But more than acting her part, she created it. She worked hard In showing the writing staff how they could turn the character from a one joke sexist stereotype into a real person -- with real feelings and ambitions. We celebrated the day the script came out listing her character not as Hot Lips, but as Margaret. Loretta made the most of her time here.
Valley Christian lost a heart-breaker in OT yesterday to very good Canyon of Anaheim, California, team. Junior Colby Jessup led VC with 37 points, including making 7 of 12 3-pointers. Also had six rebounds. Canyon finished second in the Gold division of the Classic at Damien
Obviously 1 & 10 inside the UT 40 could've meant winning the game in regulation, but we had our chance in OT. I think the most frustrating part of that no-call is that we played the first half without a key defensive player in Simmons for a similar hit that was ruled targeting.
"He didn't launch, he hit him with his face. It wasn't like he lowered the crown of the helmet."
-@CSimmsQB explains why he's glad they didn't call targeting late in the #PeachBowl#CFBPlayoff#HookEm#ForksUp
Cam Skattebo reveals that the play for his touchdown pass was called "Philly Special" and explains that he actually called an audible so that he could throw it to the receiver. @ASUFootball
Scott Van Pelt: “I don’t care who it is. That’s targeting 100 times out of 100. It wasn’t [called] in this case.”
Dusty Dvoracek: “I thought it was targeting in the moment. I picked up the phone, made a few phone calls. I talked to Bill Lemonnier, who I think is one of the absolute best, works for us at ESPN/ABC as a rules expert, and he said verbatim: ‘It’s a defenseless player, there was an upwards thrust indicator, forceable contact to the head or neck area. It’s targeting.’”
“And if your opponent makes forcible contact with the head and neck area, we’ll call it Targeting.”
“With dozens of slow motion camera angles that should be a pretty obvious penalty to enforce, right?”
“Absolutely not”
