RML Hospital, where most of those injured in the police lathi-charge were taken, is refusing to provide a consolidated list of the people admitted.

Even lawyers have not been given access to the list. Why is the hospital withholding the numbers? This isn't a request for anyone's personal medical details, it's simply about knowing how many people were admitted after the incident. Transparency on such a basic fact shouldn't be this difficult.

The BJP model is to suppress the legitimate concerns of people through intimidation.

In Chhattarpur, Madhya Pradesh, villagers, predominantly from indigenous communities, have been protesting against the Ken-Betwa River Interlinking Project, demanding fair compensation for the loss of their lands and homes. Their protest reflects the depth of their anguish and the government’s failure to address their legitimate concerns.

The BJP government responded by forcibly removing protestors, dismantling their protest site and detaining social activist Amit Bhatnagar, who continues his hunger strike.

Development cannot come at the cost of constitutional rights, dignity and justice. As witnessed at Jantar Mantar and now in Chhattarpur, the BJP’s model of governance is to suppress the voices of affected communities instead of addressing the failures that gave rise to their concerns. The voices of the people must be heard, and development must place the rights, livelihoods and welfare of the people of India at its centre.

after abducting Sonam Wangchuk from his hunger strike, the state abducted Amit Bhatnagar from his hunger strike early in the morning. Amit had been protesting with several tribals against the Ken-Betwa river link project and other irrigation projects in Chhatarpur district.

VIDEO | Madhya Pradesh police removed protesters and ended the 'satyagraha' that was launched against the Ken-Betwa Link Project and other irrigation schemes.
