It’s fairly normal to be jealous of someone else’s wealth. Thinking you have a claim on that wealth is disguising. Letting the government leverage your jealousy into hatred and potentially policy changes makes you a tool.
No, you don't get it.
He does not have $1 trillion sitting in cash, it is 99% stock in his companies.
To make that wealth liquid would mean selling all that stock which would swiftly destroy *both* the companies (Tesla, SpaceX, others) and the wealth. If he sold it all, he'd end up with maybe $100b max, several hundred thousand people would be out of work, the companies ruined and many of their suppliers also ruined.
Okay, but now Elon has $100b in cash, and can "solve the world's problems".
$100b divided by the world's 8 billion people is $12
If you were in charge, several of the most innovative industrial companies in the world would be destroyed, hundreds of thousands out of work, and space would again close to human civilization for another generation.
But everyone on earth could have one nice meal and you could revel in your altruism.
Why is everything so expensive, he asks, as he proposes new rules to make running a business even harder and more expensive.
- State gov't across the country
Jeff Bezos has benefited me by making goods and services I like to use. You are a parasite who has done nothing but take money from me to spend frivolously. In a just society, you would be living in a cardboard box. You should be thankful each day life isn't fair.
Blue states are clamoring for special taxes on the wealthy (California, Washington, it will spread elsewhere) at the same time as massive amounts of fraud are being uncovered. This really encapsulates the moment we are in - our government is incompetent, corrupt and wants more.
Of course I’m against the confiscation tax in California. Of course we libertarians will fight against blatant theft. That being said, I understand why many of us don’t have a lot of sympathy for these tech billionaires who have been aggressively pushing policy to this very spot. This is your fault you idiots. And yes we will keep fighting for you anyway…us liking you or not doesn’t belong in the calculus..
In 1913, only 1% of households filed income tax
Now, 100% do.
Every time a tax scheme is created, it starts with "just the rich" and quickly applies to everyone.
Every time.
California will seize assets of every citizen if this passes.
Not income, assets. Your house. Your furniture.
This would end the Golden State.
@MarissaFahlberg @nietzsche258918 You do you. Put whatever needles you want into your body. Just don’t expect me, as an elected official, to pass laws forcing other people to do the same.
The wake up call for me is when I caught the CDC lying about the efficacy of COVID jabs for those who had natural immunity.
1) Just because someone has money doesn't mean you or the government are entitled to it.
2) If you force investors like Bezos to liquidate investments to pay taxes, then it will cost jobs and growth.
3) I don't know who this stuff is meant to fool, but anyone with any experience with government knows that adding $200 million or even $200 billion to federal budgets won't accomplish any of those things.
We run a 2 trillion dollar annual deficit. That money would, as best, go toward paying off the interest on our debt. And if you created a new entitlement as you are suggesting, it would be so filled with fraud and waste within 2 years that it could eat up Bezos' entire fortune while barely helping anyone.COVID-19
To prove the point, Minnesota tried to offer to pay for meals for kids during Covid-19. The result was the Feeding Our Future scandal, where dozens of people conspired to steal $250 million+ from the program.
We can start talking about increasing tax revenue and adding new programs when the people who run the government can show they can effectively use the massive budgets they already have instead of wasting them. Until then, stop demanding more of other people's money.
Almost no one thinks that giving 30-60% of their own money to the government is acceptable. But a sufficient majority think it is okay for that to happen to someone else's money.

“A question for everyone: survey data suggests that by September 12th, 2001, belief that the twin towers were still standing had decreased significantly. If you are among the people who reacted that way, why specifically? I'm hoping for long, diverse, individualized answers.”
