Because whooping cranes had disappeared from the eastern United States for over a century, captive-bred chicks had no wild adults to teach them the route south. To re-establish the flyway, pilots flew open-cockpit ultralight aircraft while wearing hooded crane costumes to serve as the birds' surrogate migratory parents.
