On Friday, June 5, the United States announced over $240 million in humanitarian and disaster response assistance to Catholic Relief Services (CRS). CRS has global network of local partners, ensuring that assistance reaches the most vulnerable populations efficiently and effectively. It was my pleasure to meet with CRS President and CEO Sean Callahan recently, where we discussed U.S. humanitarian assistance through his organization to crises in Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, and across Africa. CRS has a demonstrated track record of excellent humanitarian service and is a natural partner of choice for global assistance.
Today, during the launch of the 2025 State of Uganda's Population Report, under the theme: “Mental Health: A Silent Emergency.”
Our Executive Board Chairperson @pamdebams emphasised that Mental health is no longer peripheral. It is central to Uganda’s development trajectory.
"There remains a clear mismatch between mental health need and investment, we must shift from viewing mental health as a social expenditure to recognising it as a strategic investment in economic growth."
She encouraged the @MinofHealthUG, @mofpedU, #Developmentpartners, #CivilSociety, #Privatesector, #Media, #Religiousleaders, among others to continue working with the National Planning Authority(#NPA) to translate evidence into policy, programmes and investment.

I commissioned the Wagagai gold mining project in Busia District today, celebrating a significant step towards processing minerals in Uganda. Under my leadership, we will not export unprocessed minerals, as this undermines our economy.
Wagagai aims to achieve 99.9% purity in gold processing locally, benefiting Uganda financially and creating over 5,000 jobs once fully operational. I urge other miners to ensure minerals are processed before export.
By maximising our natural resources, gold, lithium, tea, iron, etc., we can create jobs and industrialize Uganda. The Wagagai project is expected to generate over $100 million annually for 21 years, and we must leverage these resources for a sustainable future.
I congratulate them!
