It really should. But I’ve seen this movie before. Luckily for UK fans, most other schools are out of money, so there less other noise/variables than there was with freeman or Young.
I really have to assume at this point, he’s made a decision and is simply waiting on timing.
Outside, it seems like UK is the best fit. More playing time, better system fit, closer to home, can be “the man” which helps future NBA aspirations.
At Arizona or UL he’s competing with other guys trying to get theirs for the NBA to see.
I’ve seen a lot of people saying that going to UL or AZ is better for his NBA aspirations, but I don’t really follow that logic.
Apparently, you haven’t been paying attention…. For now, UK doesn’t have the edge they once did in these situations. That can (and likely will) change overtime, but as we stand, UK has no “program edge” over any top 25 program.
I’m a Texas fan, and watched this play out for years post Vince Young/Colt McCoy era. It took Sark building something great, to give Texas that edge back. And even with that, they still haven’t gotten back to a chip.
I do believe eventually, UK gets back to having the aura they once had, but it will take multiple years, regular and post-season consistency and at least one final four to get there.
Milan could accelerate the timeline, but even with him, UK has a lot of work to do to get back to being on the level many UK fans believe they are still on.
All that said. I hope it happens because UK being UK good for college basketball. Same could be said for UNC.
@DylanBallard_UK I don’t mean to diminish the real and serious hardship that people with real PTSD go through. That said, this fan base has some version of it.
@TristanUda what do you think happens if immediately following the Stokes visit, UK put out a press release saying they were no longer considering Stokes?
Is UK in a better or worse position if they had the stones to do that?
I don’t know all the details, but I suspect it would have sent some shockwaves through recruiting circles and caused agents and players to look at UK differently. It could have been a chance to take the power back.
I suspect Stokes would have made it an Oregon vs Kansas decision so he could have his Big moment, but UK would have been busy handling other business.
You’ll have to excuse me if “trending towards a signing” carries a little less weight than it once did.
That said, I would like to see Pope go full international if he’s going to be the coach over the next few years.
Break the mold and go where the others aren’t. There’s tons of talent and UK has a pretty good institutional foundation for getting international players signed and eligible based on past experience.
Could be a place UK can separate from other programs.
Just may need to set aside budget for interpreters.
I don’t want to be negative, I want to be positive. Truly.
I want someone to give me one reason, any reason, why I should think Mark Pope has a shot at signing him? Literally, I’ll take anything. Like, “his coach’s cousin’s brother once sat next to mark pope on a long distance plane ride”. Help me out…
Anything….
