I should preface this by saying I'm not Jewish, so if I speak out of line, I'm happy to be educated.

I want to talk about the lab kids' tattoos and the parallels many viewers have drawn to Auschwitz. The combination of shaved heads and identification numbers inevitably evokes the way prisoners were dehumanized and marked in Nazi concentration camps.

There is nothing inherently wrong with referencing real historical tragedies in fiction. In fact, stories often draw on history to communicate the horror of oppression and dehumanization. But if you're going to invoke imagery that strongly recalls the Holocaust, you have a responsibility to acknowledge that symbolism and handle it with the nuance it deserves. But the show never acknowledges those associations. The characters don't, and as far as I'm aware, neither the Duffers nor the cast have discussed them publicly.

It doesn't stop there. Over the years, many fans have gotten lab number tattoos themselves. The Duffers should have encouraged people to think more carefully about the historical associations of that imagery and the implications of romanticizing it. It's a real life tragedy that has affected millions of people, it should not be treated like an aesthetic.

Secondly, during s4, costume designer Amy Parris discussed using triangles in Robin's wardrobe as part of her queercoding. In that same season, Mike wears a prominent grey triangle over his heart for most of the season. It's obviously not identical to the inverted pink triangle used to identify gay prisoners in Auschwitz, but it's similar enough that many viewers have drawn the comparison. If Mike isn't canonically queer, then this feels like a cruel joke. It goes beyond queerbaiting. It's basically mockery at this point.

I want to reiterate that I'm not Jewish, so I'm not speaking from lived experience. This is my perspective as someone who has read extensively about the Holocaust and found the handling of this imagery to be surprisingly careless. I'm happy to be corrected if any of this is out of line. I love history and I love analysing media, that's all.
