THE LAW MUST BE MORE THAN A PROMISE. IT MUST BE A REALITY PEOPLE CAN FEEL.
Returning to the Supreme Court a year after my conferment as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, this time as President of the Nigerian Bar Association, was a moment of profound reflection and gratitude to God. It was also a reminder that every milestone carries a responsibility beyond the honour itself: the responsibility to make our institutions, our profession and our collective service count for something greater.
At the opening of the 2026/2027 Legal Year, I reflected on a question that must remain central to our work as lawyers: what value is a right guaranteed by law if the person entitled to it cannot enjoy its protection?
The distance between a right written into law and a right truly enjoyed remains one of the most important tests of our justice system. It is reflected in the delays that deny people timely remedies, the barriers that limit access to justice, and the experiences that shape public confidence in our courts. Closing that distance requires more than declarations of commitment. It requires accountability, institutional reform and a consistent willingness to make justice work as it should.
It also requires us to look inward. A profession that advocates dignity, fairness and justice must embody those principles in its own practices: in our ethical conduct, in how we treat young lawyers, in the remuneration we offer and in the opportunities we create for the next generation of the Bar.
As we begin another Legal Year, our task is not simply to celebrate the law, but to strengthen its capacity to protect, to resolve, to restore and to serve. The credibility of our profession will ultimately be measured not only by the principles we defend, but by the lives those principles improve.
We must measure our work by what changes in people’s lives, not by how many declarations we make. One experience of justice at a time.
Oyinkansola Badejo Okunsanya, SAN, FCIArb
President, Nigerian Bar Association
@HighChiefOkoro When the gods want to kill a man, they first make him mad. A man who is only entitled to ONE vote is bragging as if he is above the over 240M Nigerians that will decide the outcome of 2027 election.
Shame!!!
@CDcareNG I need a solar that will have the capacity to carry my 82" TV, stand fan, and to charge my gadgets like phone and two laptops. Pls advice accordingly. Thank you
@abdullahayofel As your comparing motorcade, also try to compare the efficiency in governance and provision of basic amenities for the citizenry.
You're more idiotic and berived of knowledge than the "obiidiots" you're making reference.
Idiot of life
@ARISEtv Who said PBAT is entitled to a second term. Did the constitution expressly say so or we're just being ignorant as a people? Only the people can give a second term mandate after success of first term and it is never an entitlement. PBAT has failed and must GO in 2027
@BashirAhmaad Why should you peddle false news? That's not taken from Abia. Keep dreaming. You all will cover your face in shame when PBAT loose the 2027 election
@HighChiefOkoro This is an edited post. Atiku never said that, pls don't be deceived by this cheap fake news.
PBAT will not come back in 2027.
PO will lead Nigeria.
@Big_marvis "Capacity & intelligence? Does PBAT appear to you as having the requisite mental capacity and intelligence?
For how long do we fool ourselves as a people who desires to grow
@instablog9ja Instead of thinking on how they can package their unsellable PBAT of a candidate, they're begging a sellable, competent & quality candidate to step down.
Goats in sheep's clothing.
PO must Make Nigeria Great Again
@ARISEtv@themanCJAY@SeyitanAtigarin That's what you get in a education system that's long dead. Imagine a so-called graduate doesn't know how best to address a CEO of a group. It's a pathetic situation. She's definitely not employable.
@abdullahayofel@officialABAT@Mautiin01 Why should you involve the entire Nigeria youths in your statement because of stomach infrastructure.
Truly some of you needs phychiatric examination in this "country of particular concern"
@HenryUgwuEsq I don't expect any contrary vote than Mrs. Badejo-Okunsaya Oyinkansola, SAN. Her Selflessness, passion, love for the Bar and her desire to see both the Seniors and the Young Lawyers earn better, live better and practice better is second to none.
@officialABAT Because of you, the Nigerian child lives with hopelessness.
It is our prayers as Nigerians that may God and even our forefathers who paid for the liberation of this country with their lives, never allow you to return in 2027.
You're a disaster to Nigeria and Nigerians.
@vanguardngrnews We don't care where the next president should come from, we only need a hero to fix Nigeria before we're left with no country to call our own.
@realFFK Men that aren't sincere to themselves, cannot be sincere to their nation. You're both shameless, without honour and pride. Once these virtues are lacking in a man, you can expect anything from him. Two Stomach infrastructure errand boys
@renoomokri May PO forever be your nightmare that will cause you to have sleepless nights.
Don't you have any issues to put your attention on except Peter Obi?
@renoomokri So you think Nigerians would still take you as a serious person?
You're just one frustrated, hungry and desperate fellow seeking survival for yourself and family.
A man who saw nothing good in PBAT now turns around as a praise singer.
SHAME!!!
@seyilaw1 It's really pathetic that all what you wrote here are figments of your imagination.
Can you mention any effective economic policy initiated by PBAT that has improved the economy of Nigeria?
Hungry man seeking stomach infrastructure.
