Imipenem treated MDR E. coli in 9/10 cases in 2016, now down to 6/10.
Could making sure concentrations are sufficient, through TDM, help keep important antibiotics working for longer?
Edit by TOI on worsening antibiotic resistance situation
"Need of clear guidelines on preventing 🏥 acquired infections for all 🇮🇳 🏥, backed by regular independent audits. Mass awareness campaign on misuse of antibiotics (esp. OTC) must be considered."

By measuring antibiotics in patients and adjusting doses to reach effective amounts, AMR could be suppressed and treatment could be more effective.
This could help us on our way towards a sustainable future of antibiotic use.
#AMR
My research is focused on developing tests that can measure antibiotics. By measuring antibiotics, treatment could be improved, making sure there's enough antibiotic to fight the infection, and not too much to be toxic.
“Before I developed a drug-resistant infection leading to sepsis, I believed #antibioticresistance only happened in third world countries... which I now recognise was very naive."
Powerful new #Superbug story, kindly shared with us by @1Antruk: https://t.co/rq9QlIfyFD #AMR#UTI
Follow-up TDM sampling is also needed in future studies to show dose adjustments are effective at improving target attainment. If adjustments are not effective or follow up sampling not carried out then TDM may not be successful
I’m looking forward to seeing the results of: https://t.co/7U55Rkj5bX hopefully it will give us a clearer idea of the clinical effects of TDM in these antibiotics
A scary picture!
Can therapeutic drug monitoring of antibiotics help suppress AMR?
Studies are needed to identify whether optimising antibiotic levels prevents AMR, and to determine optimal levels if that is the case.
NEW—An estimated 1.2 million people died in 2019 from antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections, more deaths than HIV/AIDS or malaria.
