Lorenzo Salgado Araujo called Houston home for 35 years. On Tuesday, an ICE agent shot and killed him. His family learned of his death from a video before anyone bothered to knock on their door.

New York City stands with the Salgado family in demanding a full, independent investigation and real accountability. To the Salgado family and any immigrant family in this city living in fear: we grieve with you and we will continue to stand beside you in the pursuit of justice.

Houston has cultural music/songs that all Houstonians know. We have special observances days like 713 day, June 27th, Go Texan day and Black Houstonians were instrumental in preserving Juneteenth which is now a NATIONAL HOLIDAY.

Houston is home to the national hub for preserving Buffalo Soldiers' history via the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum. The city is directly connected to their legacy through the 1917 Camp Logan mutiny, the 1906 Brownsville affair, and the 2023 exoneration of 110 soldiers.

Black rodeo culture is deeply rooted in Houston, stemming from Black cowboys, who were among the first cowboys in the country. This legacy is celebrated annually through the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s Black Heritage Day and the trailblazing Prairie View Trail Riders, established in 1957 to break segregation barriers.

Houston is home to 2 HBCUs. Prairie view and Texas Southern, home of Ocean of Soul" Marching Band: The band is nationally renowned, performing at Super Bowls, NBA and NFL games. These 2 schools have an annual event, called the Labor Day Classic which has been recognized for 40 years.

Houston is also known for BBQ. Black Americans are the architects of modern American barbecue, having merged West African, European, and Indigenous techniques (we have ancestry of all 3). We developed pit smoking methods, complex sauce recipes, and, post-Emancipation, founded many iconic, regional BBQ joints that define the cuisine today.
