Imagine this happening in a courtroom.

A man murdered his friend.

He was arrested, charged, and brought before the judge.

The judge looked at him and said:

“You committed a serious crime. Justice must be served. You must be punished for what you have done.”

The man replied:

“But Judge, look at all the good things I have done! I prayed every day. I followed my religious rituals. I gave to the poor. I helped people. Surely all these good deeds should be enough to save me.”

The judge looked at him and then looked at the family of the person he murdered.

They were not asking for good deeds.

They were asking for justice.

The man’s good deeds could not erase the murder. His religious rituals could not undo the crime. His generosity could not bring his friend back.

The crime had to be dealt with.

Justice could not simply sweep the crime under the carpet.

The judge said:

“Your good deeds do not cancel your crime. Justice must be satisfied.”

And this is where the Gospel becomes so powerful.

The Bible says:

“For the wages of sin is death.” — Romans 6:23

Then, suddenly, another man steps forward.

He looks at the judge and says:

“I will take his punishment.”

The guilty man looks confused.

“What? Why would you do that?”

The man replies:

“Because I love you. I know you cannot make yourself righteous by your own efforts, so I am willing to take your place.”

The guilty man asks:

“What do I have to pay you?”

The man says:

“Nothing. This is a gift. Believe in me, and receive what I am offering you.”

The man can hardly believe it.

“Just like that?”

“Yes. But when you walk out of this courtroom, don’t go back to the life that brought you here. Live differently. Turn away from your sin.”

Then the substitute turns to the judge:

“I will take his place.”

The judge asks:

“You understand the punishment he deserves?”

“Yes.”

“And you are willing to bear it for him?”

“Yes.”

So the guilty man is released, not because he was innocent, not because his good deeds were enough, and not because his crime didn’t matter.

He is released because someone else took his punishment.

The guilty man walks out free.

The innocent man stays behind and receives the sentence that belonged to him.

That is the beauty of the Gospel.

Jesus didn’t die because our sins were not serious.

He died because our sins were so serious that justice had to be satisfied.

We could never make ourselves righteous through good works, religious rituals, or human effort.

So Christ took our place.

He paid what we could never pay, so that we could receive what we could never earn.

Salvation is not God pretending we never sinned.

It is God dealing with our sin through Christ and offering us forgiveness by grace through faith.

And when you truly understand what Christ has done for you, you don’t walk out of the courtroom saying, “Great, now I can continue sinning.”

You walk out saying:

“Someone gave His life for me. How can I continue living the same way?”

“He loved me and gave Himself for me.” Galatians 2:20
