I welcome today's results of the North Atlantic Council meeting at #NATO Headquarters in Brussels, dedicated to the security situation in the Black Sea, a topic of great importance for Romania and for NATO. Allies firmly expressed their solidarity with Romania following recent drone incidents.
Russia’s war against Ukraine continues to create major risks for Euro-Atlantic security, particularly in the #BlackSea, a region of strategic importance for the Alliance.
It is therefore important that NATO strengthen its presence and capabilities in Romania, including in the area of countering aerial and maritime drones. Romania once again emphasized the need for additional contributions from Allies and highlighted that our country has important initiatives, projects and procurements underway in this regard.
During the discussion, it was agreed to accelerate NATO projects on responding to drone threats, so that support measures for affected Allies can be approved at the Ankara Summit.
Black Sea security is also essential for protecting critical infrastructure and strategic energy projects such as Neptun Deep, which contributes to Europe’s energy resilience. This topic was part of today’s discussion.
Romania will continue to work together with Allies for a safer Black Sea and a better defended Eastern Flank.

Drona marină care a explodat în această dimineață în Portul Constanța făcea parte, alături de alte mijloace similare de luptă, dintr-o operațiune militară condusă de Ucraina împotriva agresiunii ruse. Forțele ucrainene au pierdut controlul asupra respectivelor mijloace ca urmare a acțiunilor de război electronic întreprinse de Rusia.

Intrarea acestei drone în spațiul suveran românesc reprezintă o consecință directă a războiului purtat de Rusia împotriva Ucrainei.

Informații primite în cursul dimineții de la partea ucraineană au permis evacuarea zonei cu risc de explozie.

În acest moment, toate cele patru drone marine ieșite de sub controlul forțelor militare ucrainene s-au autodetonat.

Pe lângă drona care s-a autodistrus în portul Constanța, o a doua s-a autodetonat, sub monitorizarea Gărzii de Coastă, în largul Portului Constanța, iar alte două drone au explodat la circa 145 de km est de Constanța.

Niciuna dintre aceste drone nu a produs victime sau daune semnificative.

În acest moment, nu mai există pericol la adresa cetățenilor români și a infrastructurii naționale.

Pe parcusul întregii zile, am fost permanent în contact cu toate instituțiile implicate.

De asemenea, există o comunicare directa între Administrațiile Prezidențiale din România și Ucraina și, în egală măsură, MApN, SRI, MAI și MAE au menținut un contact operativ și eficient cu partea ucraineană și cu partenerii din UE și NATO.

The drone explosion in the port of Constanța shows that Russia’s war is increasingly spilling over into EU territory.

I spoke with Foreign Minister @oana_toiu about today's developments and expressed the EU’s full solidarity with Romania.

The ultimate responsibility for what happened rests squarely with Russia. As President Zelenskyy told Putin in an open letter yesterday: Moscow can stop this war any day.

Next week, EU Defence Ministers will discuss how to further ramp up our support for Ukraine and increase the EU’s own defence readiness.

Tomac is currently a member of the European Parliament and honorary advisor to the president.

Tomac was also an advisor to President Traian Băsescu, between 2005-2008 and then in 2012. He is a Bessarabian Romanian born in Ukraine: he was born in Babele, a commune in southern Bessarabia in the former Ismail County on June 27, 1981.

The commune belonged to Romania/Moldova several times in history, especially in the 19th century. iT was part of the historical region of Bugeac until 1812, when it was part of the Principality of Moldova (vassal of Ottoman Empire), before being annexed by the Russian Empire.
