One of the two victims killed in Monday’s shooting in Bambui, in Cameroon’s North West Region, has been identified as Khan Genesis, a young man from Mamben, Pinyin.
Genesis graduated from the University of Bamenda in Bambili last year and had decided to further his studies while working as a commercial motorcycle rider to make ends meet.
He was transporting a young woman, said to be a Level 200 university student, when armed Ambazonia separatists opened fire on them in Bambui. Both victims were killed in the attack.
The young woman had earlier been identified as Mirabel Kunyi. She was reportedly riding on the motorcycle when the gunmen opened fire around the area commonly known as C Bend.
Sources say the shooting may have been linked to an earlier failed kidnapping attempt near Bambui Hospital, where a victim escaped from armed separatist fighters.
The killing of the two young people has left residents of Bambui and communities in Pinyin in shock, as civilians continue to pay the price of the ongoing conflict in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions.
