Today, Ukraine honors the Day of Defenders.

To those who fight. To those who protect. And to those who gave everything — thank you.

You are the shield of our freedom and the heart of our resilience.

Eternal memory to the fallen. Glory to the living.

[Rohoza (Дев'ятий) Mykhailo 🇺🇦🇱🇹🇨🇦 @Oct7NeverForget]

Tortured to death. Forever 39. 💔😥💔
The story of one Ukrainian the whole world must know.
Auschwitz? Buchenwald? No. Mordovia today.
His name was Mykola Andreiuk. Callsign — Khram (“Temple”). Senior Seaman of the 36th Separate Marine Brigade. A Ukrainian. A defender. A human being. Alive — until November 14, 2023. Tortured to death — in a penal colony in Mordovia, on the territory of the fascist Russian state.
He was only 39.
Mykola was born in the village of Novopodilske in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region. He grew up in a large family. He did well at school. He worked at a mining and processing plant in Kryvyi Rih, supported his mother, and helped his brothers and sister. He never had a family of his own — because he served. Because he chose Ukraine.
In 2014, he volunteered for the National Guard, took part in the ATO/JFO, and later transferred to the Marines. In 2021, he was wounded. He could have been discharged — but he stayed. When Russia launched its full-scale invasion, Mykola was already on the front line.
Shyrokyne. Mariupol. Spring 2022. Encircled. No communication.
One single message to his sister: “I’m alive, but the Russians are all around us. I burned my documents. And I’m keeping a grenade with me in case I’m captured.”
On April 4, 2022, Mykola was taken prisoner. He was transported to Olenivka. From there — to Mordovia, to the prison camps. To a modern-day Gulag.
In the same place where Russians once destroyed Ukrainians in Soviet prison camps, they destroyed another Ukrainian again.
Eighteen months of torture. His weight fell to 60 kilograms. His heart could not take it anymore.
He died.
He died far from home, without a lawyer, without a verdict, without any chance of rescue.
Russia “returned” his body in December 2023. But his family learned about it only four months later.
This is a war crime. This is torture. This is state-sponsored killing.
And this is not an exception. This is a system.
What was done to Mykola is part of the mass abuse and destruction of Ukrainian prisoners of war. Part of an attempt to erase the people who refused to submit.
Mykola was buried in Kryvyi Rih. He was posthumously awarded the honorary distinction “Mariupol. Defended — We Will Prevail” and the UOC-KP medal “For Sacrifice and Love for Ukraine.”
But no medal can bring a human being back.
There is only one thing we can preserve now — memory.
Memory that becomes an accusation. Memory that drives out fear. Memory that will not allow us to make deals with those who kill people in prison cells.
Mykola left behind his mother, three brothers, a sister, and his nieces and nephews.
And this photograph was taken after his body was returned.
A photograph that should one day be preserved in a museum of Russian terror, alongside the photographs from Bucha, Izium, Yahidne, and Mariupol.
SO THAT IT NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN...
SO THAT NO ONE FORGETS...
AND NO ONE FORGIVES...

[Rubizh @RubizhBrigade]

When Russian troops occupied Bucha in 2022, civilians were executed in the streets. Men. Women. Russian speakers. Ukrainian speakers. It made no difference.

And now we’re told #Ukraine should “make peace” by surrendering to the same army.

[Catalin @Caataaliin]
