A new Federal Member State would be born in Somalia in the coming days- the Sool, Sanaag, and Ayn also known as Katumo.
Fact book about SSC
1. It is home to Sayyid Mohammed Abdullah Hassan and the base of the Dervish anti-colonial war. This war is the longest anti-colonial struggle in the continent. Even Winston Churchill’s early career was shaped here in SSC.
2. It is also home to Sultan Mohamed Ali Shire of Lasqorey. He was, according to colonial record, the most supreme authority in British Somaliland in the 1900. He was exiled to Seychelles, married from local women and died in the 1960.
3. It is home to well known Somali poets such as Ali Dhuh, participant of one of the longest epic poems that ran for over 20 years with over 100 participants uninterrupted, and Ismail Mire, whose verses of “arrogance begotten from power breaks those who possess it” (Ragow kibirka waa lagu kufaa ..) is one of the Somali poems that foretold the negative aspects of authoritarian rule.
4. The SSC landscape is part of the Nugal plains - a vast Savana land fit for pastoral economy; on the Sanaag side, it houses Somalia’s region that boasts a Mediterranean climate where the Cal-Madow mountain range hugs the seashore of the Gulf of Aden and the Serrar plateau and adjacent flat lands. Not only is it Panaromic, but it is rich in ag and rare minerals. Last year, over $300 million worth of minerals were smuggled out of this region.
5. Through the District of Buuholdle, it connects Somali Regional State (Ethiopia), Somaliland, and Puntland. It is the gate way to connect the region’s movement of people and products.
6. In the 1960s, most of the bureaucrats in Somaliland, following the decolonization of the region, came from Aden whose forefathers immigrated from SSC to Yemen during the colonial wars of the 1900s. It has rich human talent.
7. Until now, the region was a political football field for politicians from Somaliland, Puntland, and those at the federal level disempowering the residents of the region. Claims and counter claims over the very future of the residents of this important region retarded social and economic
Improvements in the region.
8. The late Dr. Ali Khalif Galydh struggled since the disintegration of Somalia to find an appropriate role for this region in the reconfiguration of the new federal Somalia. Although he departed to the hereafter world, and I hope that he is in JNF, he must be smiling.
9. The ew SSC state is born out of the bloodshed of 2023, after a mass uprising refused what Somalis call “gumeysi ,” or “oppression.” This time the oppression was coming from Muse Bihi’s Hargeisa. Removing the yoke of oppression cannot be stopped once the masses see and understand what their rights are. And that is what happened in SSC.
10. The experience of SSC thought us at least these three lessons: a) the power of self help effort when no gov helps you; b) the inspirational role of traditional elders in time of stress; c) the ultimate result of arrogance in power as shown by Hargeisa who bombed Lasacanood as was done to Hargiesa in the 1980s brings down powerful military machine.
Persuasion and accommodation is preferable to coercion and subjugation by brute force.
The challenge that requires higher political skills now is to reconcile SSC with Puntland and SSC with Somaliland all with equal footings. If that can be had, a bigger picture for peace and reconciliation can emerge.
