🚨 NEW: The family of the Belfast attempted beheading victim has called for calm
"We have many migrants who make a deeply valuable contribution to our country. We depend on them to make our country work. We do not want this terrible tragedy to be used to divide people"
There's been a long and shameful history of lenient sentences for violent crimes against women & girls in Ireland.
I'll go through some of the most egregious cases over the decades.
The lives of these victims didn't seem to matter to the judge.
CW: sexual assault, murder. /1
MAJOR UPDATE:
Ireland's RTÉ reports that Bambie Thug has asked on the EBU to address KAN's commentary during their performance, and has stated they should be disqualified if they have also broken the contest rules.

🇮🇪 Bambie Thug have posted a statement on their Instagram regarding their absence from this afternoon's Grand Final dress rehearsal.
"There was a situation [...] which I felt needed urgent attention from the EBU"
Notably, Nemo and Marina Satti were also not present.
An end product of my research on femicide.
I tried to document all violent deaths of women and girls, then mapped the location of their deaths and the sentences given to their killers.
This thread is for 574 women and girls killed in the 1922 - 2022 century in Ireland.
Spoilers: you can't have an honest and frank debate about Ireland's immigration policies with someone who will otherwise set fire to a homeless shelter. You can, however, embolden such people by treating them as though they should be treated with respect.
As many of you may have seen, we had given a call out for meals as we were so short on hot meals and we ended up serving more than 650 meals. Every single one of these meals was gone within an hour and 45 minutes.
We were inundated with food, crisps, chocolate, bars, biscuits, fruit. Over the last week, we have given out more than 40 food hampers, vouchers and toys to help out people who are struggling during this holiday season.
We had a huge number of selection boxes and little m&m santas that we were able to give to little children who came to the soup run. It made them really happy and they were so grateful.
We want to give a huge shout out to all the mammies, daddies and the children who have donated sweets over the last couple of days. Another huge shout out to Chloe and Finn for their much needed treats.
A big thank you to everyone who supported us through the last 8 years. We just hope this will come to an end one day, but we are very privileged and honoured to do the work that we do. We want to wish everyone Happy holidays this season.
Remember those who are less fortunate and remember that a smile can change the world.
Our work would not have been possible without our biggest supporters: every single one of you.
Thank you for helping those in need and those who are forgotten. If you would like to support our work, please hit the link below. Thank you and have a lovely weekend.

"42% of murders of women in Ireland is done by the 9% that are migrant men" is a made-up statistic.
It's spread to dehumanise immigrants as 'savages'.
I've compiled real stats on murders of women in Ireland, including prior criminal records, to counter this hatred and lies. /1
26 relatively cheap ideas to improve Belfast City Centre TOMORROW and over the next 6 months.
Belfast HAS stuff, but even a diamond needs a polish every once in a while. A thread 🧵...
Ireland should massively increase the number and size of national parks, ban open grazing, end fake sitka "forestry", and allow land to regenerate naturally.
This means the state buying appropriate land at scale for rewilding, and protecting that land.

Witnessed this demonstration today.
Delivery drivers are repeatedly being attacked on the streets of Dublin city. These are often migrant workers and losing a bicycle is losing a livelihood (they ended their demo at a place where a stolen bicycles tracker was detected)
