The Pittsburgh native earned First-Team All-America honors as a junior for his hometown Pitt Panthers in 1981.

In the 1982 Sugar Bowl, Marino's last-minute, game-winning touchdown pass to John Brown on fourth down punctuated his MVP performance in Pitt's 24-20 upset win over Georgia.
