Response to “Sub-states in Africa’s Post-Colonial Era: Challenging Statecraft” by Faisal Roble
I read Faisal Roble’s recent article with interest. While it raises important themes related to statecraft and Africa’s post-colonial challenges, it also leaves me with several concerns, particularly regarding its selective framing, lack of actionable insight, and reliance on outdated narratives.
1. Selective Framing and Overgeneralization
The article ambitiously attempts to diagnose Africa’s fractured post-colonial statehood. However, when it turns to the Horn of Africa, specifically the dynamics between #Somaliland, #SSC-Khaatumo, and #Puntland, it does so with little nuance or balance. These are comparatively minor disputes when set against the broader and more urgent crisis of #Somalia’s failed state. Treating them as representative of the continent’s dysfunction oversimplifies their significance and risks distorting the Somali context. Somalia’s internal political realities are complex and cannot be reduced to a passing mention within a pan-African generalization.
2. Describing Without Prescribing
For a scholarly piece, the article falls short in offering grounded, applicable solutions. The proposal to strengthen Regional Economic Communities (RECs) remains abstract, repeated often, yet rarely tied to specific local contexts. In fragile environments like Somalia, where statelessness, contested legitimacy, and hyper-local governance dominate, vague continental frameworks are not enough. Real solutions require local grounding, community participation, and a pragmatic understanding of what governance looks like in fractured societies. Scholarship should move beyond diagnosis toward viable, context-sensitive strategies.

It is troubling that some veteran Somali intellectuals, including @faisalroble19, continue to recycle frameworks that have shown little progress over decades. Rather than fostering a forward-looking vision rooted in shared values, collaboration, and “Somalinimo,” the article retreats into old grievances repackaged in pan-African terms. This does not advance the trust, reconciliation, or institutional rebuilding needed to shape Somalia’s future. Rebuilding Somalia demands more than nostalgic rhetoric; it calls for a generational shift grounded in inclusion, accountability, and mutual respect.
If we are serious about healing long-standing divisions and laying the foundation for a functional Somali future, we must prioritize cooperation across Somali communities in #Somalia, #Ethiopia, #Djibouti, #Somaliland, and #Kenya. This includes trade, infrastructure, shared water resources, and regional security. Those who have managed to maintain relative stability and governance should be recognized as models to study and engage, not dismissed or politicized. Most importantly, the solutions must be Somali-led, rooted in the lived experience of the people, and respectful of both historical pain and contemporary complexity.
In short, rebuilding Somalia and contributing meaningfully to the discourse on African statecraft requires fresh thinking grounded in honesty, humility, and relevance. Not nostalgia.
