The Party That Attacked Farage Over Crypto Money Took Some Of Its Own

Labour ran an advert this year asking whether Reform was "the party of the people, or the party of crypto billionaires." The advert was aimed at Nigel Farage's undeclared £5m gift from a cryptocurrency investor. It sits uneasily beside what this newspaper has now disclosed about the Defence Secretary.

Wes Streeting took £37,500 between 2022 and 2023 from a think tank called Labour for the Long Term. Thirty-four days before its first donation to him, LLT's founder, David Lawrence, received £500,000 from Sam Bankman-Fried, the cryptocurrency fraudster now serving 25 years for stealing billions from his own customers. Streeting's team say they checked LLT's donor list before accepting the money and Bankman-Fried's name wasn't on it. There is no suggestion Streeting knew where the money originated. That is not the same as saying nobody should have known.

The strongest evidence in this story is the contradiction Lawrence himself has been unable to explain. He told The Telegraph the donation to Streeting was actually funded by a different backer, a City investor. Electoral Commission records show that investor didn't start giving to LLT until February 2023, seven months after the money reached Streeting's office. Lawrence was asked to account for the gap. He declined. That is not a matter of interpretation. It is a discrepancy sitting in the public record he cited to defend himself.

The mechanism that made this possible is the same one Labour claims to want closed. MPs cannot legally accept more than £500 from a foreign national. Unincorporated associations like LLT can, because they aren't required to disclose their donors' origins, only their own donations to politicians. The Electoral Commission has been calling for this loophole to be shut for years. Labour is currently legislating to close it, having spent this Parliament attacking the Conservatives and Reform for exploiting precisely the gap its own Defence Secretary walked through.

Lawrence's defence, that Bankman-Fried's gift went to charity rather than to LLT, rests entirely on his own word, since he has been "unable to reassure party bosses with his own financial records," according to senior Labour sources. He stood down as a prospective candidate in November 2023 once that failure became apparent to his own party. Streeting's office had no comparable warning. Labour's internal machinery evidently knew enough about Lawrence to quietly steer other shadow ministers away from his money. Nobody steered Streeting.

What's concerning here isn't proof, it's proximity. LLT didn't confine itself to health policy. It gave evidence to Parliament in 2023 on how artificial intelligence should govern nuclear weapons systems, the same effective altruism network that has clashed with the Pentagon in America over AI in weapons procurement. Streeting is now the minister who will decide exactly these questions for Britain. Nothing proves his policy has been shaped by that history. But a Defence Secretary whose office was staffed for a year by a donor-funded adviser from a think tank actively lobbying on AI and nuclear policy is not a coincidence that ends the story. It's one that starts a new line of inquiry.

Labour built its attack on Farage around a simple principle: voters deserve to know where a politician's money comes from, and politicians have a duty to find out. Streeting's team say due diligence was followed to the letter, and perhaps it was. But the letter of the process didn't stop £37,500 of Sam Bankman-Fried's money reaching the office of the man who now controls Britain's defence budget. The party that built an advert on that principle owes the public an explanation for why its own systems missed it.

A farmer in Shropshire is selling his farm this September and nobody has died.

Two hundred and twenty acres. A hundred and forty ewes, seventy suckler cows, a shed with one end held up by a telegraph pole, and a tractor bought new in 1994, which is the last thing on that farm that was bought new. His grandfather bought the place outright in 1961. He is 54 and has never had a penny of debt.

The books say the farm lost eleven thousand pounds last year. It lost money the year before as well.

He is not bad at this. The government's own review, chaired by Minette Batters, found nearly a third of British farms were loss-making in 2024.

On paper the same farm is worth £1.9 million.

Pasture in his county averaged £8,600 an acre last year, and not a pound of that was set by anything he grows. Two blocks within nine miles went to buyers he has never met. One for solar. One described in the particulars as a natural capital opportunity.

His mother is 81 and lives in the bungalow at the top of the lane. When that comes across with the other half of the ground, the two halves clear the £2.5 million threshold, and twenty per cent of the excess is a bill in six figures on a business that has not made money in three years.

His son is a radiographer in Telford and is not coming back. He said so once, kindly, and never made his father ask twice.

So it goes now, while he can still choose which fields and to whom. He is selling the good ground first, because you cannot raise a bill off the rough.

The Treasury collects nothing from any of this. The sale happens years before the tax event, so there is no tax event left to have.

What Britain loses is a hundred and forty lambs and seventy calves a year, off ground that will never produce food again, in a country that already imports forty per cent of what it eats and has just had its worst cereal harvest since records began.

That is one farm. There are thousands of them, doing the sums at the same kitchen table this month.

The beef on your shelf this Christmas will come from Brazil, and the price will be higher, and nobody will connect the two.

The police have been accused of press censorship over the case of the fantasist Cambridge professor Jason Arday.

The Metropolitan Police investigated Times Higher Education reporter Jack Grove after he was accused of harassment for emailing Prof Arday a series of legitimate questions about his academic record. Arday, once hailed as Cambridge’s superstar academic, is now at the centre of a plagiarism row and has resigned.

The Free Speech Union’s General Secretary, Lord Young of Acton, has written to Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley seeking an explanation as to why the Met investigated Mr Grove at all. On Wednesday, the Met informed Mr Grove that it would be taking no further action.

In his letter, Lord Young said: “Telling a journalist to stop making lawful inquiries of a public figure under investigation for potential professional misconduct is not safeguarding – it is press censorship, delivered over the telephone by an officer who appears not to have realised he was speaking to a journalist doing his job until Mr Grove told him so.”

The Met also passed on a complaint by Prof Arday about fellow academic Prof David Harris of Plymouth Marjon University to Devon and Cornwall Police, but that force rightly refused to investigate.

As Lord Young asks, why was Devon and Cornwall Police able to dismiss the complaint so quickly, while the Met took four months?

The Met has some serious questions to answer. Academic freedom and a free press are two central pillars of our society.
