Theology 101: Maybe church ministry has made me a little cynical, but I strongly suspect that when the Corinthians heard the opening paragraphs of Paul’s first letter, many in the church felt no remorse for their schisms but seethed with resentment toward Chloe—"That snitch!” (1 Corinthians 1:11)
@JeffreyPWiesner Just a quick thought...he chose a couple of the 12 who were fishermen. Not all 12 were. That weakens things a little. "Go and exact taxes from men." (To Matthew).
@JeffreyPWiesner “He did not ignore him (Hebrew: He did not hide his face from him); when he cried out to him, he responded.” – Psalm 22:24b
He did not hide his face. It's in the same psalm. It felt like he was forsaken but reality is Yahweh did not hide his face (turn away).

@JeffreyPWiesner I appreciate the distinction in the pulpit vs. the classroom. Sometimes that difference is forgotten. I am very slow to give two options (let alone 3-4) in a sermon. Mainly so as not to confuse. But also to give a solid foundation on where we stand…not wishy washy. I’m with you.
@JeffreyPWiesner As a two time DTS grad, and disciple of that pastor, this was never told to me one time...ever (that I can recall). Nor has it ever occurred to me until I read this post. Maybe Keith chose the wrong professor. Or you caught the pastor at a bad time? Please watch broad strokes.
Theology 101: I suspect many American evangelicals would prefer the take-action, fight-the-oppressor, political revolutionary Barabbas over the turn-the-other-cheek, love-your-neighbor, pay-your-taxes Jesus. Alas, I fear they would trade away Jesus for the brigand in a heartbeat.
“Pastor, what are you going to do in light of [the crazy cultural-political event of the week]?”
Pastor: “I’m probably going to do what I typically do—preach the Christ from the next text next.”
Theology 101: In my experience, the problem isn’t that too many Christians are ignorant of or reject God’s commands; the problem is too many Christians believe they are the rare exception to the rule and that God’s clear command doesn’t apply to their unique situation.
