Yang Naiwu, while collecting rent, takes a liking to the landlord's daughter, Xiao Baicai, and brings her to the Yang family to help with chores. The county magistrate, Liu Xitong, has a lecherous son, Liu Haisheng, who has an affair with Yang Naiwu's wife, Zhan Shi, which Xiao Baicai witnesses one day. So, Zhan wanted to marry Xiaobaicai to the butcher Ge Xiaoda to prevent her from telling Yang Naiwu about the affair. One day, Ge Xiaoda discovered that Xiaobaicai had been raped by Liu Haisheng. Fearing implication, Liu Haisheng instigated Zhan to murder Ge Xiaoda. Yang Naiwu and Xiaobaicai were arrested for the murder. To protect his son, the county magistrate decided to pin all the blame on Yang Naiwu, forcing both of them to confess under torture. To clear their names, Yang Naiwu's sister went to the capital to appeal to the emperor. The imperial inspector and the three judicial departments jointly remanded the case for retrial. Ultimately, Yang Naiwu and Xiaobaicai were acquitted and released. Liu Xitong was exiled to Xinjiang until his death. Zhan was paraded through the streets on a wooden donkey, and Liu Haisheng was sentenced to be drowned in a pig cage.
