us, the most vanishing of all. Once
for each, only once. Once and no more.
And we too: just once. Never again. But
to have lived even once,
to have been of Earth—that cannot be taken from us."

i recently noticed a rilke collection at the bedside of an actively dying patient. when pointed out, the patient's wife opened the book and read the following,
"Why, then, do we have to be human
and keep running from the fate
we long for?

Oh, not because of such a thing as happiness—
that fleeting gift before loss begins.
Not from curiosity, or to exercise the heart...
But because simply to be here is so much
and because what is here seems to need us,
this vanishing world that concerns us strangely—

@colleenmfarrell @iwashyna @KatieHauschildt "It feels important to honor autonomy, but often these decisions don’t feel autonomous or informed." -- This says it all to me
@colleenmfarrell thank you for sharing colleen! your work was such a balm as i struggled to center the patient experience in nursing school. your sharing continues to challenge me in my career and personhood and for that, thank you <3
One of the worst parts in all this, beyond literal murder of Black men and women, is how many people are responding with disapproval about how people should behave & feel. This is an inherent racist part of White culture.

a time of love, a time of hate
a time of war, a time of peace
a time you may embrace, a time to refrain from embracing
to everything turn, turn, turn
there is a season turn, turn, turn

Trauma life hack:
“Name it to tame it” is an axiom used in therapy circles. There is power in naming things, in putting words to your own inner story.
For starters, name this moment as a time of collective trauma. This feels like trauma because it is trauma.
