In “The Great Beauty” I felt like there was an underlying sense of freedom. I saw this when the young girl was angry she had to paint and didn’t get to play. But after she is done getting upset making the painting into something beautiful seems to free her. #XUarts112summer20

In the film Mamma Roma I liked how the film showed a mother and son relationship which is kind of unusual in films. What was going on in the very last scene before the end title came up when all of them were looking out of the window? #XUarts112summer20

@Arts112M I think that the figs represent Kracklites connection he feels to stories about figs in history involving poisoning. As well as foreshadowing a death to come in the film. #XUarts112summer20

@Arts112M I agree with your connection they are both very similar! I think that in the 1960s directors and writers liked to portray men as the bachelor type. I see this pattern a lot in movies during that time period or shows or movies now recreating the 1960s. #XUarts112summer20

In the film La Dolce Vita I wonder how long the Trevi Fountain scene took to film and if people had to clean the fountain water before Marcelo and Sylvia got into the fountain. #XUarts112summer20

@elisejmoe I noticed that as well. To me I feel like in all neorealism there is no sympathy for really any of the main characters. I think this just has to do with the directors wanting to show the true sadness that was happening in Italy. #XUarts112summer2020

@MichiaThiessen I agree I felt like the sets were so amazing! I feel like in every movie in the golden age is much longer than it needs to be. But I think since it was so normal to have long movies during it’s harder to understand why now since we don’t have intermission. #XUarts112summer20

In Spartacus the gladiator scene (23:52) I couldn’t help but compare how different the training scene was to the movie Gladiator. Did anyone else pay attention to how different each Gladiator training scene was? #XUarts112summer20

@elisejmoe That’s a great question! I’m not 100% sure but from my knowledge I don’t believe that it was common especially in Ancient Rome to give the throne to a non heir. I know that royalty likes to keep the throne in the blood line to continue. #XUarts112summer20

For the movie Gladiator I was really impressed with the authentic look of the costumes. Also the use of CGI to recreate the Colosseum it’s amazing how people can use CGI to recreate history. #XUarts112summer20
